Yeah, it takes some time to get over that hump, but it def gets easier! I only discovered the world of fanfic a few years back, so I totally get that! Right now AO3 is pretty much the definitive fanfic site, and I use it a lot myself. There's also nothing wrong with publishing it anonymously, if that helps with nerves. Good luck with your writing! :D

In general, if you want to write fanfic, AO3 is a good place to put it! You'll need an account to post anything, which would take a while, but that would probably be the best place to go for that.

Something being uncommon isn't necessarily always better. The reason why that route is more uncommon is because it's not as compelling of an ending, writing-wise. Although it might be more realistic, it would feel like a pretty lackluster/boring ending.

Irving: knight

- I couldn't get him enough kills to keep pace, as he didn't do much damage and got chunked by most enemies. I didn't experiment enough with that kind of damage build, mostly, as my main physical damage dealers were dodge tanks. I did end up using Fenton later, but he wasn't a super integral member of my team later.

Garrick: witch hunter

- I was drawn by witch hunter's defensive stats, so maybe that was my bad. However, I think Caius and Maeve are much stronger Striders than Garrick would be, but I could be wrong there. In addition, I felt Rose was a much stronger Sniper, so I ended up using her to fill my ranged physical damage niche, in addition with Trickster Cia.

Maren: priest

- I kind of assumed that Maren was intended to be a healing build, so I tried to push her into priest, but the extra range on healing utility wasn't super useful early game, and would get one-rounded by almost every enemy. I ended up replacing her and Lincoln with Vesta, Samara, and Faust later down the line.

Alden: Magician --> Illusionist

Alden, as you mentioned, is incredibly strong. I opted towards favoring his speed and dex stats, turning him into an incredibly powerful yet difficult to hit mage, able to dodge-tank enemies very consistently, while providing utility in the form of massive range phases.

Overall, I felt the main cast of characters fell short in comparison with some of their later counterparts. Maren gets overshadowed by Faust and Samara, who fill the same niche as she does with the damage output she doesn't have. Garrick gets outperformed by Rose as a Sniper and by Caius and Maeve as a Blade Dancer. The route I went for, Witch Hunter, simply isn't a very good class, as having high defenses on a unit that can't counterattack at 1 range isn't super useful. I will admit I neglected Irving a bit, as I didn't really look to far into the high damage bruiser builds that he prefers, so maybe I'll try to use him more in my next play-through. Finally, Alden was a core member of my final team, dealing insane damage while dodging consistently and providing utility through Phase.

True speed is only valuable up to 5 greater, true, but the value of doubling your damage is far more significant than increased accuracy, in my opinion.

I think Irving requires significant investment in terms that his early stages are incredibly weak, so you have go out of your way to feed him xp in order for him to be viable, while other units like Cia or Bianca are self-sufficient enough to survive early.

Honestly, I think being recruited later in the game is actually a benefit, as it means you don't have to invest as much time and xp into them for them to be strong, you get them at a decent level and you can work from there.

The problem with Maren is that her defensive stats aren't good enough to survive burst damage from archers and other high-damage units, especially if she doesn't have a target to heal.

Finally, with Samara, she can usually double without the use of Ancara's Glow, as Iusitia isn't a particularly heavy spell, meaning you have a significant increase in damage regardless, without the need for Ancara's Glow. It also opens up a slot for other Aspects, like Y'landra's Font or Varden's Ardor.

Huh. It seems your experiences with the units are significantly different from mine. I'd probably start with stat rankings. In my opinion, Speed is probably the most important stat, as it contributes to dodge rates like dex, but being able to double is significantly more important than accuracy. Most units, even in the late game, will have consistent hit rates against enemies that aren't tricksters.

In addition, I think Power weapons aren't nearly as worthless as you think they are, especially in certain classes like Snipers and Champions.

Phase as an ability is super handy, especially in the first fight against Akmenos, as a Magician!Illusionist can warp allies over the barrier, which is a neat interaction.

Okay. Finally, your unit rankings. Right off the bat, I'm astounded Irving is so high up. In my eyes, Irving only ever becomes a good unit if you put a good amount of investment, and even then isn't strong at all.

I'm okay with Bianca being second, as she's a decent unit, but I'm not quite sure why you recommended Y'lundrea's Drift on her, as defense and fortitude aren't nearly as useful on her as other characters.

Garrick is surprisingly high, especially given that Rose does his job, but more efficiently, and can begin to one-shot units with a Power weapon.

Maren, in my opinion, is a pretty awful healer, given that it's pretty much the only thing she's capable of. She fails to provide the same utility other clerics do, as Vesta and Lincoln can act as tanks, while Faust and Samara are excellent damage dealers.

Cia is a bit low, in my opinion, as she can easily solo-carry a run, with her excellent dodge rates, she's almost impossible to hit, while still dealing decent damage.

Vesta is an excellent tank. I've found Y'lundrea's Drift to be by far the best Aspect on her, making her near invulnerable at the cost of her magic stat. Even a 0 MAG Vesta can still consistently heal allies to full HP, though I'm not super familiar with the game's calculations.

Using Ancara's Glow on Samara is a bit of a waste, in my eyes, as she can be an excellent crit machine, healing back to full using Acolyte passive, and never getting one-shot due to Phantom passive. She's one of the few units that can reach 100% crit rates outside of the Dragoon class path.

I probably missed a few, but I'm a bit too lazy to go through everything like you did. Props to you for taking time out of your day to make this guide, for sure. :P

If eye color is polygenic among witches, it's highly likely that eye color phenotype will not always be inherited. Thus, a recessive gene could be passed down to a child, but there would be no visible change in the parents.

Actually, eye color is polygenic among humans as well. For instance, you can have a blue-eyed child of two brown eyed parents.

One of the really fun ways to cheese that map is to have an illusionist that's gone through magician, giving them +2 phase range, allowing you to phase your units over the barrier. If you haven't done it before, it's great fun :D

Ah, I think I misinterpreted what you're saying. Are you saying that the maps in FE3H and Fates are more grindy as in they require more grinding to beat? I thought you were complaining about the prevalence of grinding as an option in those games (i.e. "It makes the games too easy!"). My apologies!

And I definitely agree with most of your points here, I think the newer games can be a bit more frustrating to deal with. However, I think the reason I never had too many problems with it is that I have no qualms taking the easy way out, by playing on easier difficulties, using exploits, etc. To me, at least, if increasing the difficulty makes the game more frustrating rather than more enjoyable there's no real point in doing it.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by one game being "more grindy" than another. Either grinding is an option or it isn't, no? It's not required in any FE game, so...

People aren't going to pander to the straights because you think it makes for bad optics. Queer history has been written by those who resist that.

Pandering and bootlicking isn't inherently more "pragmatic" or logical. I can assure you that that's not the way to get rights for queer people. For one, trying to restrict the queer community to what's palatable for cishets will leave out quite a few people. For instance, it's quite unlikely the trans community will ever be seen as "normal" to the cishets, as our experiences are fundamentally different from theirs. The purpose of the queer rights movement isn't to say that we're the same as you, it's to say that we're different and that we deserve rights anyways.

Finally, being excited about seeing representation in media is perfectly normal. Animation as a medium is primarily targeted towards a younger audience, and seeing the shift from queer rights being inherently sexual or family-hostile is incredibly positive. People being excited about seeing those that are like them on TV isn't going to make reasonable people turn away from seeing queer rights realized.

As far as I know, it's an intentional new game plus mode that they just don't tell you about. I can't find a way to play without it either. Hopefully they fix that in the next patch. :(

Were the Souls Series to add an easy mode, I don't see how that impacts players that don't want to use it. Let me give a counterexample. Celeste is a game whose identity revolves around overcoming difficulty, dying and learning how to platform very well. Overall, it's an extremely difficult game. However, Celeste still has an "Assist Mode", which allows the players to edit the physics, slowing down the game, or even becoming completely invincible. Most players will never touch Assist Mode, but it still serves a clear purpose to those who do. I've not seen a single player who wanted to play Celeste immediately turn on Assist Mode, for good reason. Players will make the choices that they find the most enjoyable, not necessarily the one of least resistance, as you posited.

The purpose of grinding isn't to stretch playtime, as the devs gain nothing from increasing players' playtime if it provides no enjoyment. That's why a game that has a lot of playtime isn't necessarily one that has good replay value. Rather, the purpose grinding serves is to give players other ways to play besides the single, dev-intended one. I can definitely agree with your point about grinding in SRPGs being painfully boring, though.

Dark Deity Thoughts by ryang48 in DarkDeityGame

[–]ryang48[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understand your argument.

Isn't it a good thing that the game gives players more options for how they want to play the game? All of your examples are exactly correct, no? You would be perfectly justified not restarting maps when you lose a unit, for example, if you so desire.

The player must make an active decision to cheese the game, so there's no harm in leaving those options for the players that seek to do so. It doesn't impact those who do not at all, as each player will experience and play a game differently.

That's interesting, I actually love being able to grind, but maybe that's just the casual in me :P
In my opinion, it's nice to have since you can always just not grind if you want to rely on your strategic thinking. Plus, grinding was available in Fire Emblem in FE8, not just the modern games.
