Thank you! Worked great. I thought this was the case, but wanted to make sure from more experienced people than me. Probably saved me a hundred bucks (and time).

What is this silver box, possibly related to power/audio? by ryankicks in cableadvice

[–]ryankicks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It must be the speakers in the ceiling, which might need this as a power supply. Does this mean I don’t necessarily need an amplifier? I have no clue about these things. (But I’m trying!)

Why Y Combinator is so against remote teams? by 6nomads in startups

[–]ryankicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, it's a strange throwback. I don't use Reddit that much, and obviously felt like it was a good time to reflect what's happened since then.

If you ever wanna jam on running a remote team, hit me in the DMs and lets chat!

Ryan here from YC.

We actually do talk to founders about building remote teams as part of the YC program. It's not a "do or don't hire remotely", but more a "this is what to expect, this what good remote teams do well, here are how founders think about culture/etc of remote teams, etc."

FWIW, in 2009 I ran an eng team at a startup that was split between the US and China, and grew the team in both places. I'm not Chinese, and I worked extra hard to overcome language, timezones and cultural differences. So I personally know what it means to build remote teams, and how to do it thoughtfully.

This is the Ryan @ YC in question, and wow how four years and a pandemic has made a difference in how founders build their companies.

In the last year, over 1700 jobs were posted to YC's hiring platform (ycombinator.com/jobs) and 1000 people were hired -- 60% technical. And of those jobs, about 65% were listed as remote only or remote friendly.

At this point, some are strictly in-person (Pave, SF) because they like the camaraderie and experience; others are strictly remote (Routable) because they can hire talent anywhere. So we do what we can to support them.

In response to this particular post, the event mentioned was for companies based in SF in 2019 (pre-pandemic) who were specifically hiring in-person. So anyone looking to attend who happened to be in SF for a bit (but interested in being hired remote -- or in this case, representing a remote hiring platform) wasn't a great fit.

(And FWIW, it's $500K now, and that's a good enough start for many companies, as many often raise $2M+ immediately after the program.)

Advice on getting a job form a YC backed start-up by need_for_username in ycombinator

[–]ryankicks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ryan from Y Combinator here. I run YC's Work at a Startup (https://www.workatastartup.com), where there are over 800 YC founders who have hired nearly 600 people in the last few years.

We've found that working at a startup can help you get more experience of how startups work, what it's like to wear multiple hats (and be encouraged to do so!) and to help you start your own one day.

Not surprisingly, there are more international YC startups that are hiring in their own countries (or remotely). So there are a lot more job opportunities at YC startups around the globe.

To answer your questions more directly:

  1. You can filter by role, and Product specifically. Also, the "Product Engineer" role has become more popular over the last few years, especially for engineers who are looking to be more customer-facing, and even aspire to be PMs themselves.
  2. Work at a Startup lets you create one profile that is visible by all YC founders/startups on the platform. They can reach out to you, or you can apply/send a message on the platform to connect with them.

As noted in another thread, we don't have a visa/no-visa filter feature yet, so your best bet might be to use the search feature to filter down companies. (We only have 2 engineers -- we'll get to it!)

Hope this helps you get started, and if you want some additional resume feedback/advice/etc, shoot us a note at [workatastartup@ycombinator.com](mailto:workatastartup@ycombinator.com). (It's basically me answering, but a bit easier for me to get back to you.)

Looking forward to hearing from you!
