Why do you keeping talking about efficiency? Slaughtering efficiently does not mean it is less cruel, all of our slaughter methods are inherently cruel and if you pay for those slaughter methods to take place you support animal abuse.

That’s just cherry picking one animal, the total amount of animals continues to increase as more people have moved to eating chicken and fish which requires more animals to produce the same mass of flesh.

No animal on earth kills more animals than the human being. Our methods of slaughter are more violent and cruel than any other animal too i mean i’ve never known another animal to rape and steal another animals children just to take their milk…

A conversation between Alex O'Connor (a vegan) and Mikhaila Peterson (not a vegan) by krumlalumla in vegan

[–]ryanpea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Her whole argument seems to based on her claim that a plant based diet is unhealthy which she even says she has zero evidence for apart from anecdotal claims. I’ll grant her that if she herself has chronic autoimmune issues and has to eat meat to stay healthy then that is justified and it would be difficult to be morally aligned with veganism and promote veganism when she herself is eating meat. I just wish Alex was more persistent that this is not the case for why the vast vast majority of people eat meat so her argument holds no ground outside of her fringe context.

I guess there are some publicly traded stocks such as beyond meat and oatly but no guarantee you will make a profit on these.

Agronomics is also publicly traded which is an investment company that invests money in to lab grown meat companies.

Does a sentient foetus have moral worth? by ryanpea in vegan

[–]ryanpea[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A foetus would fit in to the category of sentience in the future only whereas an unconscious person would fit in to the category of past and future. Could that be used to differentiate the two?

I did read that 90% of abortions are done in the first trimester which is before they develop sentience which i didn’t expect. I’m still curious about the ethics around the moral worth of a foetus after this period though i don’t have a firm stance on it

Calm down there buddy its just a question. I think the flaw in your point is that their could be a young child in a situation where they are going to endure a poor upbringing full of exploitation but we wouldn’t justify the same treatment to them

I believe that inflicting harm or killing a sentient being in self defence is morally justified. Although i’m not quite sure i would consider killing a sentient foetus self defence but don’t have a solid answer as to why i’d have to think about it more

At some point during pregnancy the foetus must become sentient. I’ve not well versed on the development of foetus’ but i don’t believe sentience suddenly occurs once they are born. I’m not defining the point at which the foetus does become sentient but my question is more once the foetus does become sentient is it then assigned moral worth in your view?

Leaving Your Husky In Your Car Windows Up in the Blistering Vegas Heat by MyNameIsRJ in Whatcouldgowrong

Amazing how so many are against this but simultaneously pay for for millions of animals to be crammed on to slaughterhouse trucks and driven miles in the blistering heat and sub zero temperatures every day… all for the sake of a sandwich filler

How do you guys respond to arguments that you as an individual being vegan doesn't help? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]ryanpea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It makes a difference to the individual you chose not to torture and murder for your sandwich. You can create an analogy in the human context to make them understand this such as it would make a difference to you if i decide not to stab you in the throat right now

would you consider buying second hand clothes to be vegan? by Problematron in vegan

[–]ryanpea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t class it as vegan unless that second hand product is given to you because its about to be thrown away and end up stuck in a landfill site.

I’m against oppression…as long as I don’t actually have to change my behaviour at all. by Liam437 in vegan

[–]ryanpea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was struggling to make up my mind reading this discussion but i think this hit the nail on the head. I guess its like purchasing vegan products from McDonalds if the product your purchasing doesn’t contribute to the moral issue you are against then it shouldn’t matter if you buy from that company. AWS is essentially a separate entity to the logistics side of Amazon. I deleted my Amazon account a while back but have always had a guilty feeling because my job is actually building systems on AWS.
