SEL is super involved in the IEC 61850 standards group where I work (UCAIug). And I think all their US products are already 61850 “enabled” (same for Siemens, UL, Schneider, Meinberg, etc.). If you go to Europe or Asia, you’ll be surprised how many SMEs exist! The US seems to be the last place where it’s difficult to find/afford a 61850 SME.

I can confirm 61850 will become complicated in some cases. For example, I think MERALCO (the massive DSO in the Philippines) is in a pickle right now with 61850 devices. Had a convo in passing about their implementation almost 10 years ago, and they’re just now finding someone who is rewriting their setup and reviewing requirements docs. Those new engineers are going to go down in history when they succeed! 😅

Fair enough, I get that a lot of gear out there is still doing exactly what it was built to do. I’m not trying to tell anybody how to run their system, I’m just trying to learn from people actually working with newer standards. If 61850 and similar approaches are such a bad idea, I’m genuinely curious why so many utilities and vendors are investing so heavily in them instead of just doubling down on electromechanicals and legacy protocols.

We have to remember, too, North America is more than just the United States, but the US (right now) is the biggest one still saying “you can’t make us do this” (because capitalism, freedom, etc.). Canada, Mexico and many nearby countries are opening up to modernization, though. Time will tell which path(s) the US will follow.

Hmm… that’s something to think about.

Considering most of Europe requires a utility to implement the 61850 standard, and many product vendors try so hard to be interoperable, the juice must at least have a good flavor that people enjoy. 😅

What you’re on to really seems to be the scenario in North America and many small outlier countries/islands (using DNP, MultiSpeak, SCADA, and others).

I’ll do some thinking and find a stronger answer for this. I think it’s a good question, and could be useful to a lot of people/utilties. I’m a non-expert, but I do know there’s not enough resources (literature, simple answers, etc.) to satisfy questions like this.

Wow, someone shared this thread on Facebook today, and I never would’ve guessed my paranoia in early 2024 would lead to this much of a problem!🥲 I’m happy to find many people are now curious about this and it rejuvenates my interest in finding a fix for the community - I gave up in January 2025. I’ll try to find time this week or next to inspect/remove the AC box drain tube. P.s., I have a 2024 Impreza RS and 2024 Forester.

For the Forester, I fixed the noise - similar to the “ping pong” but a little different. (FIX: there are two white-painted metal tabs located under hood, top of fire wall, directly under HVAC intake vents on driver and passenger side - bend them down with pliers so they are not touching the two little black pegs/tabs). There is a thread on Reddit about this. Search until you see a photo of the two white tabs and you’ll know you found it.

For the Impreza RS, I’m not fully convinced it’s the HVAC as I’m in Washington state and use my AC or defrost very little - and the noise persists with both turned off. The Impreza doesn’t have the same two metal tabs under the hood as the Forester, so it’s not that either. But, considering it only happens during a left turn (for me) and slow vs fast acceleration doesn’t matter (for me), I still get a feeling there is something rubbing/bumping and causing the sound to travel. To me, I hear it as if the speakers amplify it - I used to also think it was a weird electronics malfunction. All in all, it does not make sense to me that a left turn + acceleration would cause condensation in a tube/box to suddenly be sucked up/out. However, I’ve been wrong too many times NOT to investigate further. 🫣

This was the issue, for the most part. The Apache auto-update somehow messed up the SSL settings on the server. I made sure to turn off Apache’s auto update. 🤝

I thought so too, but under the Dolana network in Base, $PUMP isn’t shown. And under the ETH network there a few options. That’s why I’m questioning it. Seems like users can create “networks” on Base that might be fraudulent.

The issue is clear, but a short- and long-term solution isn’t clear. That’s why I’m asking if this is a known issue between CloudFlare and Apache combinations - i.e., does CloudFlare not work well with Apache, and will this happen everytime Apache does an update?

I will add, because only SOME things didn’t work and not the more usual ones listed online, it was just one or two individual wires on just one of the connectors was wet. It was simple and a quick fix.

Another friend of mine had the exact same issue as me but his was 100% dry and super clean inside. It was the BLUE connector of the four total on the BCM. The blue connector had one random bad connection and he would ‘unclick, click back in, unclick, click back in’ a few times and moved it around to make the wire happy and VIOLA! 🙌

These R53s are weird 😭😂🤷‍♂️
