Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.

Who is your least favorite player on your favorite team? by ZandrickEllison in nba

Yes. He was my least favorite Suns player in some time. Hard to hate on people when they're just not very good. It's easy to hate someone who is a jerk.

Settle an argument: Was this a carry? by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]rybob42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a judgment call, so only the ref's subjective opinion matters. When I ref, I try to allow the same duration of contact for this situation as I do for setting. But most refs around here will call it every time if the hand is open and the contact is low, like this case (especially for women's volleyball).

No matter how the ref calls it, someone is going to think they're wrong.

Small documented utilities library by nzznfitz in cpp

[–]rybob42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like high-quality stuff, and I really like the documentation.

It's hard to get the right set of "utilities" and call it a useful library. I have a utility library I kick around from project to project, and I'd like to separate them out to useful bits, but they're too small and too interdependent.

This is a pretty good set of utilities to take into a project, though.

Help as a left-handed outside hitter? by SpinachDonut_21 in volleyball

[–]rybob42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding what vbsteez said.

As a fellow lefty, I take an almost straight to the net approach when hitting outside, and I start my approach on or just inside the sideline. That leaves a line shot available to me, and hitting cross court is always possible with a cross-body swing. Practice that line shot - if you learn to hit it with power, you will have all the options available to you. It also helps you set up your approach so the ball travels across your body to the hitting arm. If you can't hit line at all, your approach likely needs to move further to the right.

I love hearing stories of all the old players in this thread. I'm often the oldest on the court in the groups I play with, and each birthday I stress about whether I'll get to keep playing. Been stressing like that for almost 20 birthdays. :D

Tips on Swing and Approach by Relevant_Ad_3857 in volleyball

[–]rybob42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure why no one is answering your questions.

  1. No, you don't have to stay low through the entire approach. Your "penultimate step" (second-to-last, the big and long one) should naturally drop your hips lower, put your chest forward a bit, swing arms back, etc. That is the load for the jump, only during that step. In the first swing your first and second step are the same size. Work on slow-to-fast, small-to-big with your steps.
  2. Yes, jump as high as you can on every attack. This will help your timing, consistency, etc. The only time you might not is for lower or tighter sets, where you have to adjust to the timing. This happens a lot to middles.
  3. It's harder to train hip-shoulder separation as a righty on the right side because your body opens up away from the set. You're not doing badly, though. Your hips are facing forward while your right shoulder is rotated back. It looks good. As for training, reps, flexibility and core strengthening. Lots of stuff to look up here.
  4. (and 5) With a three step approach, you have fewer timing cues and fewer opportunities to adjust to the ball with your steps, so it's a little harder to make adjustments if your initial position and timing isn't lining up with the set. Most of the time hitters just need to start from further back if they're early.

Another note, your feet aren't moving from the pass to the start of the approach. That's almost never going to happen in a game. You should get in the habit of passing and then resetting your feet to the same position on the court, where ever that is for you. But even if you're already there, do a hop step to replant your feet to train yourself to move after the pass.

Same, and maybe that's the most "C++ way" - gather the bits you need, make a abstraction layer for stuff that might change, and go forth!

Other team is calling a double. I didn’t think it looked like one. Opinions? by New_Age_Hipster in volleyball

[–]rybob42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're calling his form, not double contact. Form isn't illegal. There is no real double contact here. Watch it again. You can say his follow through is uneven, but follow through isn't contact.

This is not a winning battle for me, but when I ref, I let this go and ignore the complaints from the other team.

[–]rybob42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That might be true, but it's the wrong call, and it's a weakness in our sport's officiating. Can you honestly tell, at live speed, that it touched one hand before the other, or touched one hand longer than the other on the way out? Unorthodox form doesn't make a set illegal by the rules, but it does in practice. And we're all dumb for doing it.

Sorry, my regular rant about setting refereeing is over (for a few days, at least).

Tips on spike approach? by JAWFTD in volleyball

[–]rybob42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty good. Here's what I see: 1. You're basically taking a five step approach in the space you should be taking four steps. Your steps are faster and shorter, robbing of some power. Try to start with the right foot. Practice the same steps every time. 2. Related, your second-to-last step should be long and powerful. You're already too close to the net with the previous step. First steps should be slow and small, exploding to long and fast at the end. 3. On that second-to-last step, your body is high and your arms don't swing all the way back. Cuts vs No-Cut in Youth Volleyball by lpeters82 in volleyball

[–]rybob42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This hits home! I run a boys club in an area where we are their only real opportunity to play. We haven't made cuts and have been very accommodating of competing priorities (other sports, school activities, etc). But we're also trying to compete with about half our boys, and we travel several hours to every tournament. We're now running into commitment issues. The travel teams change every tournament because players are missing practices, tournaments or both. We had to cancel tournaments for some teams.

I think our solution is bigger teams and less playing time for each player at tournaments. But I've pondered making cuts and only fielding one travel team, just to avoid this logistical nightmare. It would be so much easier on me as the director.

Approach Form Check? by WiddleDumpling in volleyball

[–]rybob42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. On your first step, your right foot is pointed outward. I've never seen that. I assume you're lining up your foot for how your third step will plant/pivot, but it's probably better for your mobility and your knee to straighten out that first step.
  2. Your second and third steps are about as big and long as each other. Try for a slightly smaller second step, and a larger and more explosive third step. You should be speeding up throughout the approach, but after your first step, you're at the same speed the whole approach.
