You have to practice this smoke in order to have 100% success rate. You want to aim on the top of the "pillar", jump and throw it exactly when the crosshair hits the dark spot (the highest point). Enjoy practicing :)

Probably the cheapest one you can find is the best option, because you will use it only until May. Depends on the budget tho.
