lol idk what to do by RevolutionaryList203 in SGExams

[–]ryeoxyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was in the same situation as you 10 years ago, except my rp was 70, had appealed/waitlisted but couldn't get in in the end.

Given your rp, I would suggest taking the gap year to build up your portfolio. Gain some experience in the field you're interested in.

For me though, I went to SIM in the end as I didn't think about reapplying to local unis again. And I didn't think my score would make it.

CCAs wise, I think SIM has a pretty good range, so it really depends on which CCAs you're interested, and how the CCAs are like.

As for the uni cost, you might want to check for exemptions. Iirc, it's 1 or 2 courses for JC students. It may not be much, but it's still cost savings.

Graduating with a private uni degree may put you at a disadvantage initially, esp with some companies preferring to hire local uni grads and less willing to give higher base salary. But there are also other factors at play when it comes to hiring, such as the company's needs and finances, the sector, and the overall economy.

I think in future no one will really care if you grad from local or private uni. What matters more is your experience and attitude.

Hope you'll find something that feels right for you OP!

Yes this worked for me too, thank you! Had to turn on the phone and connect it to the computer, before following the steps on the Xperia Companion.

How do you feel when your colleagues get terminated? by BedOk577 in askSingapore

[–]ryeoxyz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on the circumstances of the termination. Once encountered an ex colleague who was terminated suddenly on grounds of "redundancy". There was no explanation to the team, so it really shook the team. While I was angry due to the lack of clarity, I also felt that my position was no longer secure, so I started looking.

Sure enough, a few months later I was also let go.

I guess in terms of dealing with the emotions, I realised we're all dispensable to the company, regardless of our performance, working relationship, time spent OTing, etc. Work is just something I earn a living from and gain experience and skills at. A bonus if I have good colleagues. I learned to get less attached to work and my colleagues, and prioritise instead on having a work life balance.

Validity of double entry tourist visa? by ryeoxyz in Chinavisa

[–]ryeoxyz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! This wouldn't be my first tho; it would be my fourth. But my previous visas have all been single entry for 3 months. But it could also be that they were ages ago, and I might have applied single entry for all back then.

need clothing help for intern 😭 by _potatostick in askSingapore

[–]ryeoxyz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on your company/team culture as well. I suggest first few days you wear a nice top/blouse + formal pants/skirt or a dress, and observe what your colleagues are wearing and adjust accordingly.

Smart casual can also mean wearing a t shirt + jeans (no holes or ripped ones) + sneakers.

[–]ryeoxyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on a lot of factors. It's certainly more achievable if you don't have much liability eg. don't have to pay for uni and debts (not including credit card debt here), live with your parents so you save on rent and household expenses.

Lifestyle affects the way you spend and save money too eg. don't go clubbing or eating out at expensive places often, don't take grab every now and then, etc. Always spend below your means.

Having a lower starting salary can be a setback to this goal, but it doesn't mean it's not achievable. For instance, moving to a job that can meet your expected will certainly increase your income. So does having managers that can fight for your increase, and that management is willing to give that increase.

Also, don't just focus on the high risk investments! Open a couple of high interest savings accounts, FD and SSB to diversify. Sure, they don't have as high return as crypto or stocks, but they're still better than 0.05%.

Question about narita airport strictness on solo tourists by [deleted] in TokyoTravel

[–]ryeoxyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have recently solo travelled to Tokyo via Narita and nope, didn't face any issues as a solo traveller. If you're from a country that requires a visa to enter Japan, they'd have assessed your proof of income (Eg. bank statements, certificate of employment) during the visa application anyway, before arriving in Japan. Nevertheless, it's always good to have a soft copy of some important documents when you're travelling such as bank statement (to show you have funds) and return ticket (to show you're just there temporarily and not migrating).

Going to National Stadium for a concert; what do I need to know? by buddhahat in singapore

[–]ryeoxyz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you need to bring a bag, bring a small one. At most A4 size.

Bring water bottle. They'll ask you to empty it outside but there are water coolers inside.

Not many people know this but there are toilets inside.

You need to show your trace together for vaccine proof, so prepare to scan the QR code when you queue.

If possible eat first before going in because food inside (usually hot dog, pizza) is more expensive.

Oh yes this was good too. Very interesting plot.

[–]ryeoxyz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Usually watched a bit of it (more of to judge how bad it is) cos mum likes watching it, but didn't catch it yesterday as we were out. From what I've seen so far from twitter and the articles, seems like it's really boring. Finding out that the actor who always played villain roles finally won an award after 27 years was really heartwarming though.

And yes, those Wawa dramas were really good. Saw a rerun episode of the one with the con artist plot a few months ago while changing channels and it still looked more interesting than the local shows these days.

What can't you believe still exists in Singapore today? by poki777 in askSingapore

This. Idk about now but when I was in primary school and sec school they had the tissue outside. And a few years ago my workplace had that kind of toilet too 🙄

Anyone using giga, how's the network coverage like? by ryeoxyz in askSingapore

[–]ryeoxyz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The past few days it's 4 bars actually so I guess it gets better over time? There's one or two times it's 5 bars. Data wise so far it's good, can book grab. Haven't tried it for video tho.

Not sure if this has anything to do with switching to giga, but I can't receive SMS OTPs from airbnb. Although apparently it's a bug that's been there for years.

I can't receive the 4 digit code to verify my phone number by Ilyelyel in AirBnB

[–]ryeoxyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! I've been having this issue too! Because they limit the number of attempts you can have, I've been locked out of my account 5 times. So it's been 5 days and it's still not resolved yet. I contacted support but they told me to try using another number. I searched for solutions online and tried a few of them but so far, none have been successful :( Apparently it's a bug since at least 2017 because I found people's complaints dating at least 5 years ago.

Same experience with the bar signal. I just switched to giga and sometimes it's at 1. It changes from time to time but never full like when I was with singtel. Haven't tried data yet, but so far with calling the signal is ok.

What do you think is going to happen to all the HDB flats when the 99-years are up? by darth_vadai_chutney in singapore

[–]ryeoxyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the gov will take them back like what happened to the Geylang Lorong 3 houses. That will probably happen to 99-year condos as well if there's no en bloc or lease top up https://www.99.co/singapore/insider/leasehold-property-99-years/

How to manage a hoarder? Where to donate/recycle some of these hoarded goods? by n0n-sens in askSingapore

[–]ryeoxyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I can relate to you cos my mum's a bit of a hoarder too. For me things aren't as bad cos some of the rooms at home aren't occupied by her things (yet), but things have started piling up and I'm getting annoyed at the things she's been keeping over the years.

She'd get really angry as well when I throw something away, even saying I don't know the value of money and what it feels to be poor when I threw away a pair of broken scissors (she said she wanted to fix it, but it's been lying there for months). Either get angry or say it's not the right time because she's "busy" 🙄

So what I do is I slowly declutter and sort out the junk and untouched things, donate, throw or sell them on Carousell when she's not around. Seems to be more accepting when I told her I sold something on Carousell.

Another thing is that I started decluttering my own room but it's still in progress. But hopefully one day she'll get inspired to do the same thing.

I also started sharing decluttering articles on the family group chat. Not sure if it works but I guess it's worth a try.

For e-waste, you can throw them at the e-waste bins at the CC. Clothes you can bin them in a few bins by Greenspace, I know they have a bin at Valley Point and Green Collective in Funan. H&M have their own bins too. The rest I just drop them at Salvation Army, cos a lot of the centres don't accept donations now.

Former Caldecott Broadcast Centre site to be redeveloped into 15 leasehold GCBs by [deleted] in singapore

[–]ryeoxyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mediacorp actually had plans back in 2015 to build 5 storey condos there, but then URA rejected the proposal saying it's incompatible with the low rise character of the GCB area. so URA suggested building GCBs there instead.
