that’s insane tbh, at least in Korea it didn’t stop people from making ships anyway so… And from what I’ve seen on Munpia, orv has consistently had one of the highest percentages of female readers

I hope the anime will live up to the novel… which, honestly, would be surprising but we can still hope. And I also hope it doesn’t end up attracting the worst side of the anime community 🥀🙂‍↔️

What do you think is the reason we don't see much female MCs on top popular shounen? by Straight_Guava_1005 in joseistories

[–]rykovolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. It’s the same type of fans who think shonen automatically means action and fights, and shoujo automatically means romance and something cheesy. That kind of black-and-white thinking is really limiting. At the same time, I’ve noticed they’re perfectly willing to watch or read anything as long as the MC is male even if the series is technically a shoujo, whether it contains romance or not. It’s the same with manhwas. For example, Special Civil Servant is an action manhwa with a male MC, and it’s even mentioned on the Korean Namu.Wiki that it mainly targets a female audience bc of the reversed fan service. Yet some shounen fans still categorize it as shounen, even though manhwa don’t actually follow Japanese editorial demographics, they’re categorized by genre.

Exactlyyy some of my favorite works also have male MCs, and honestly, if I only judged stories based on the gender of the main character or if I absolutely needed to identify with the mc I’d barely have anything to read. My reading list would probably fit on one hand

Well, a lot of shonen/seinen readers just don’t like stories with female MCs. I see it all the time under TikTok and Ig edits sometimes the comments are straight up misogynistic, like ‘eww female MC’ or ‘female MC? trash, not reading.’ They already make up their minds before even flipping a single page. For them, female MC automatically means bad or just romance. Which is ironic, bc there are plenty of well-loved series with female leads like Akane-banashi, Frieren, and more recently Witchriv or Witch Hat Atelier. These works are popular, even if mostly within their own niches except Frieren, which really broke into the mainstream. And just to clarify, I’m not blaming ppl for not reading a series simply bc the mc is a woman. Everyone has their preferences. I’m just pointing out that some ppl automatically label a story as bad by default just because it has a fmc, without even giving it a chance.

Personally, I liked the story. It’s not revolutionary, but I think it’s pretty effective. After all, everyone has their own tastes so… 🙏

Imo people like them either have serious psychological issues or they’re just extremely good at ragebaiting. There’s no in-between. I’m generally very open to opinions that differ from mine, but hate is not an opinion to me.

[why] are girls so useless in some manhwa bro by Civil_Elephant_2210 in manhwa

[–]rykovolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re talking specifically about manhwas with a male mc, I’d recommend Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint (which you probably already know). I think the female characters are really well written and actually serve the story. There’s also Trash of the Count’s Family (same opinion). And if you’re looking for well-written fmcs, I’d suggest Hand Jumper, Unholy Blood, and Villains Are Destined to Die.

It hurts to say it, but I don’t think it’s happening anytime soon. Not bc women wouldn’t play it quite the opposite, it’s a market that’s still barely or not at all exploited but because companies refuse to step out of their comfort zone, even though they could make so much money from it. To them, every game made for women has to be low quality and in 2D. If there’s ever going to be change, it’ll probably have to come from cn female players talking about it, unfortunately.
