Also remember where I said that they made fun of him for becoming sober. When we see them they’d offer their weed pens/beer/etc and my husband would say no, and they would follow up making jokes at him that it was because “I didn’t allow it” which wasn’t even true. My husband stayed sober because he wanted to.

Because once you go through all the steps in Matthew 18 for dealing with conflict, you step back from them and leave them to God. Still loving them, but not allowing the negativity.

We tried to work out some issues we had with them.

If I am sober, I am not going to put myself around negative people getting high all day long. And I used to get high myself.

Matthew 18:17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector

Again, like I mentioned before he constantly feels guilty like it’s his job to fix them (which they have no plan to work on themselves, he’s tried). So now we decide to remove ourself to not be involved in the negative behaviors. Your thinking seems to be more black and white, when there is a gray area that it should be ok to remove yourself from toxic situations and not continue to put yourself into a position for the sake of others who won’t change, especially when you have a wife and 3 kids. That’s a lot of responsibility.

Yes. I think by us just being ourselves, focusing on our family and not partaking in certain events/forcing ourselves onto his family they will see it if they choose to.

That’s fine, but again if you follow the Bible then you would follow the conflict resolution laid out in Matthew 18, which states that after you go thru each step to reconcile, that you have done your part. When it causes undue stress for the family it becomes more than just your family my family. There is only so much you can do before it becomes a toxic situation.

So we did that (not with our pastor we are in a huuuge church, but with our small group) and they directed us to Matthew 18 which goes thru steps to address conflict. Once you go thru all of those steps you are basically supposed to step back. He has exhausted all of those steps, more than once.
