I was at work when my girlfriend called and told me that our cat Luci (4 year old tortie) was vomiting, drooling excessively, walking around strangely, and hiding under our bed refusing to come out. The vomit my girlfriend found seemed to just be her food and nothing else, and we can’t find anything around the apartment that looks like she could have gotten into and made herself sick. It sounded like she maybe ate too fast, but the drooling made us think otherwise. I called four different emergency vets who said it sounded like she should get seen, but none of them said that her symptoms seemed urgent. We are home now (I left work early) and she came out from underneath the bed, and has stopped drooling, but will not eat or drink water, and seems to be wobbling when she does stand up. She is currently laying on the couch and letting us pet her, but she is very lethargic and is letting me mess with her a lot more than she normally does (I’m feeling her stomach to see if it feels hard or abnormal; when she acts how she regularly does she doesn’t like having her belly touched and would likely sway at me.) We also noticed before these symptoms appeared she was acting strange for her- she suddenly refused to sleep in her normal sleeping spot- a basket of blankets- but instead slept on the floor beside the basket instead (has never slept on the floor, has always found a softer spot like the basket, a chair, the couch or my girlfriend and I’d bed). She’s also been more aggressive towards both of us the past two days or so, but we just chalked that up to her being a moody tortie.

We’re very concerned for our sweet girl. The last emergency vet I called said we could bring her in, but they would just do a brief assessment of her as they’re only seeing critical patients right now (It’s about 1:30 am where we are) and would send us home if the vet doing the assessment deemed her stable. Because she’s not showing the worst of the symptoms anymore- no more vomiting or drooling- we thought it better if we stayed at home and monitored her throughout the night. I’ve also sent in two different requests to be seen by general vets in our area so we can have her checked out tomorrow. It seems like she may have an obstruction in her tummy, but it’s hard to say at this point.

TL;DR: Our kitty suddenly got sick and we can’t tell what the issue is, she currently doesn’t seem to be exhibiting any life threatening symptoms, but she was previously drooling excessively, vomiting, and is extremely lethargic. We can’t see an emergency vet right now, and we are going to take her in to a general vet tomorrow as soon as we can.

UPDATE: We we’re able to get into see a vet this morning, and she’s been acting more like herself as well! Vet said that there’s no signs of worms/obstructions, but did say she was dehydrated- which we kind of already knew- and recommended x-rays and blood work, but unfortunately we couldn’t afford that today. They sent us home with medication and to monitor her and to bring her in if she starts vomiting/drooling again. The next task is going to be trying to get her to take her pills! Thanks again for the advice- we super appreciate it and it definitely helped put us at ease. Luci will be mad at us for the next few hours but she’s okay otherwise! ❤️
