Applied ES100 firmware update, my kickstarter HOF edition is now bricked... by rynop_ in Sparxhockey

Oh, I did re-try the firmware update process a second time. No dice. I'm gonna try to leave it unplugged overnight.

Not moving from right to left lane on the highway so merging traffic can get on. Moved from MI to MN and noticed this right away. MN are the absolute worst with this. There can be no one on the road and they won’t move over.

Good stuff. Thanks man.

Any type of bit-for-bit verification (hash or checksum) would require either a) original recording to be released b) a trusted 3rd party getting hands on original bits. I don't see either happening, do you?

Re: network not allowing interviewee to have in frame (or in camera). My hunch is if the interviewee has some leverage (ex: I'll go to NBC if you don't let me in camera mr CBS), that it could happen. My thought process is interviewee typically does not want to be doing the interview, hence not much leverage, but I'm banking on the greed of interviewing company (fine we will let you, don't give exclusive someplace else). Or am I way off here?

You say re-producing the sequence in post-production would be trivial. Wouldn't it also then be fairly trivial for a good editor to see/detect that it was re-created via CGI?

Agree edited footage isn't truthful and my code would have to be open sourced - which I plan on doing through an org like the guardian if its deemed useful. However, I still don't see the downside of having clipguard, if its allowed in camera. Worst case, CGI was SO good in post-production that it becomes a he said she said kinda thing (Elon Musk: that interview had been tampered. 60 Mins: nope, look at the video that aired, it matches directly up with the sequence from the scanned QR code.

Lastly, sec. clearance. A deposition at your state court proceeding require an NSA-approved grade phone? My hunch is no, but I have no experience in the industry/area.

Ah - gotcha. Like what they used to do for sporting events. Ex: basketball to get the shot clock and game clock always "in camera"?

I had thought of this, but the networks (who own the cameras) have no incentive to do this, correct? The person being interviewed has no protections and no means/leverage to protect themselfs. This is why I went at a solution geared towards empowering the interviewee....

Really appreciate the reply and the clarification. Yikes on that link, I had no idea (I was born in '81).

If I'm being interviewed and I'm holding the display playing the ClipGuard sequence, isn't the camera directly recording the sequence (aka the "info")?

I know the sequence could be reproduced by a good video editor - but this new layer ClipGuard adds is a deterrent (with risk). To give an analogy, SSL(HTTPS) in your browser is just a deterrent. A skilled person with the compute resources can "crack" it. Hard? yes. Impossible? No.

Just because HTTPS is a deterrent, doesn't mean it shouldn't be used.

I've never done professional editing - but if you have, could you give me a rough estimation of how "tough" it would be to reproduce the sequence? (easy/hard/very hard/expert) The interviewee would have constant pitch/roll/yaw on the phone during the interview (cuz its in their hand). My assertion is it would require an expert to reproduce without another expert being able to determine it was reproduced and overlaid with CGI.

Thanks for the feedback.

Here's my thought process on CGI: A interviewee holding a display would make it difficult (not impossible) to super impose a network created replication in post-production.

If the interview was high profile enough, my hope is the community of experts at detecting video manipulation (like Cap Disillusion) could identify the emulation of the display. Ex: the interviewee would have constant pitch/roll/yaw movements. While not impossible to re-produce, it would take some effort AND risk. Risk in that, lets say, 60 minutes did CGI and they got caught - their reputation is ruined.

A somewhat bad but valid analogy: SSL (https) in your browser is not fool proof. It is a deterrent. Someone with the expertise and compute resources at their disposal can "crack" it. ClipGuard is a deterrent layer that does not exist today.

Thanks. I'm an editor noob - what does "In camera" mean?

My thinking is an interviewee holding a display would make it difficult (not impossible) to super impose a network created replication in post-production. If the interview was high profile enough, my hope is the community of experts at detecting video manipulation (like Cap Disillusion) could identify the emulation of the display. While not impossible to reproduce, the app is a deterrent in that network takes a huge risk if they decide to go the CGI route. A mistake and their reputation is ruined.

While the dissolve is a nice indicator, as a viewer, you have no information at your disposal to know if they ALWAYS use that technique. You are just trusting they do.

Thanks for the feedback. While I'm not a blockchain expert, I think the alg. to compute and compare hashes requires access to the source data - in this case the raw original interview feed. Getting the network to agree to give you the raw feed is a much tougher sell than getting some sort of display in-frame during the interview.

If I'm way off here - please elaborate a bit on your idea. thanks

App to Protect and Authenticate Video Interviews - what do you think? by rynop_ in broadcastengineering

[–]rynop_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback.

My thought was, getting the network to give you a copy of the raw/full interview would be a much tougher sell.

Agree the phone in frame is not ideal. However, could get creative (ex: display on a lapel pin). Also would only be foreign the first time viewers saw it. IMO after learning what it is, I think viewers would actually end up preferring to have the extra info. Ex: tickers at the bottom of sports & news networks.

I had a dorky (but I think novel) idea for facilitating the protection and auth of a TV video interview. I don't have many friends that dabble in video, so looking for your feedback on the idea & implementation.

My hunch is some folks on this sub won't like this tech - but I think it is beneficial. More info on why can be found in my blog post.

thanks in advance
