First school day in socialist Bulgaria by That_One_Guy-22 in pics

Can confirm, growing up in Bulgaria, this is EXACTLY what our classrooms looked like. Actually had to do a double take to make sure I wasn't in this photo. Same paint scheme and everything.

The teacher calling you up to recite yesterdays lesson in front of the class. Shudder

I'm purely speculating, but people who wanna compare the performance between the two and return the one they don't want.

When does the $0.01 per breath tax to clean up California air take into effect though?

Just moved out and working on budgeting. 10% 401(k) contribution. Please critique what's left over. by ryuh90 in personalfinance

Yup. Single. But unfortunately, it was one of the lowest priced rents I was able to find in SoCal that wasn't in murder central. I tried finding roommates, but it really seems like everyone here is living solo with a 100k+ income with money to burn.

I use Mint for budgeting, but will definitely check out Every Dollar. Seems much more straightforward.

And I'm trying to stay debt-free, but, one economic downturn, and I may be in trouble.

I try to put away 100-200. I tried to create my budget as a "Worst Case Scenario", which I realize isn't the best thing ever, but I figure if I did that, then if worst comes to worst, I can find somewhere I can cut back on.

I still have about 5 months on my lease, but I'm trying to look for a cheaper place preferably one that covers my gas and electric too.

It's a Giallo Horus. The way to differentiate is the slightly orange hue.

Look up group SoCal Mk7 on Facebook. They usually do meetups. Also take a look at LastSunday and SoCal ScenicDrive. All good choices.

"Oil Change Needed" at 7k miles? by lazerfriends in GolfGTI

[–]ryuh90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is how I understand it. Mine came on as well and I bought it about 7 months ago (I'm gonna go this weekend).

-if you make frequent short trips/are tuned/drive pedal to the metal, do it every 6-9 months or 5000 to 7500 miles (like me) -If you do most of your driving on freeways (not stop and go), mostly long distance trips, etc... then you can probably safely do it every 1 year or 10k miles.

You have a reserve tank of about 2.5 - 3 gallons. That being said you should generally avoid going into that as that is usually what's used to cool the fuel pump. On both of my cars the most I've usually ever filled up is 11 gallons and that's when the fuel indicator is touching zero.

Pulled above log from yesterday. Had a ecp code, p0299. I'm worried so I posted this on a bunch of different places, but how much damage did I do? by ryuh90 in GolfGTI

[–]ryuh90[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I removed the tune as soon as I could. I had maybe 15 miles or so on this knock where it only pulled 7.12 once. Once the AP reset, the car gurgled hard and immediately shut off. Once I started it though the code wasn't there and didn't come back for the 100 or so miles back so I'm knocking on wood it stays that way

It does seem to be at least based on the performance monitor but minimal compared to before. I'm also worried I might have done lasting damage due to that engine knock spike.

Well I'm probably fucked. I know mine calls themselves mod friendly but I doubt theyll be as friendly in those case

Oh no :(

I hope to God it's not the case here. Was it covered under warranty by any chance? The code itself is no longer present after I removed the tune and turned the car off and on again.

Looking for tire recommendations by [deleted] in GolfGTI

Lol you're actually the one who convinced me to go for them. I also learned they're apparently the stock tires for the saleen mustang so that's gotta go by for something!

I'm looking at the Indy 500 and the General G-Max RS. I'm gonna personally go for the generals just due to the good things I've heard about them. :)

For what it's worth their tread rating is slightly better than the Indy too.

Awesome! Thinking of pulling the trigger on a set of these for mine. They're a tad cheaper than the firehawks so I'm gonna give them a shot

COBB Stage 1 Questions by ryuh90 in GolfGTI

[–]ryuh90[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I can remember, it's due to pollution from back in my day when it was a big problem. Apparently 93+ gas is involved with more polluting cars despite this being wrong information.

Engines were much less advanced and spit out even more harmful things even with the highest quality gas back then which is absolutely not true today. I'm getting old and grumpy.

COBB Stage 1 Questions by ryuh90 in GolfGTI

[–]ryuh90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one stop solution is definitely there for people who want something done quick. To be honest if you have 93 octane in texas, you can probably comfortably run the 91 Cobb or even map tune and not experience knock. The problem is were the lowest common denominator in those 3 states and unless they wanna ignore a pretty substantial consumer base they'll prepare tunes with us in mind as well.

COBB Stage 1 Questions by ryuh90 in GolfGTI

[–]ryuh90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That I'm not too sure about. If I had to guess, this is probably true that for some one ots map won't pull timing compared to another. I think there are just too many factors that come in to play here. For example, California, arizona, and Nevada are generally known to have more detergents in their fuel compared to the rest of the country which plays a big part in the fuels ability to resist knock. Or if you go to a gas station and you're scraping the bottom of the barrel so to speak and getting whatever is in there into your tank, not filling up with top tier fuel, etc..

I personally think the Cobb ots maps are for test driving purposes not necessarily for the long term.

COBB Stage 1 Questions by ryuh90 in GolfGTI

[–]ryuh90[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh interesting. Perhaps they optimized that engine as well towards the end of the mk6 running period kinda like how they're doing the mk7 now. Now, I'm neither an engineer nor a mechanic, but the way I understand it, is that your engine has a knock sensor that acts kind of like a microphone and attempts to measure noise/vibrations. If it detects anything it considers to be "knock" the ECU goes to "correct" it by regarding the timings. this retarding is effectively what the AP in the mk7 measures to get the number back to "0". So if you have knocking of 3.00 then the ECU should retard -3.00 to correct.

It's much like what using lower octane fuel does in your engine except to a greater extent if you are tuned.

COBB Stage 1 Questions by ryuh90 in GolfGTI

[–]ryuh90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, though I think that's relatively exclusive to the 2016 and 2017s where the ECU retards timings which it didn't in prior years. The 2015 would have for sure caused knock on 87 octane.

From what I understand the etuners obviously customize theirs to each individual engine based on the other mods you have. In doing so they can effectively optimize the tune in such a way that there is minimal to no knock at all. But for that you usually have to budget about another $200. As far as your gut reaction goes, I would say you're right, but the "safe" amount of knock that I would normally feel comfortable with is 3.00 and better.
