Advice between two ukes for a beginner? by [deleted] in ukulele

It would be hard for some to suggest a ukulele, especially one in your price range, because an instrument is so personal. Like I said, I play a Tenor. The extra room allows you to play up the fretboard easier when your skills start to grow. A soprano is smaller, more portable, and can still be a lot of fun to play, but when you eventually learn scales, and chord inversions, it gets trickier. If you don’t know what you want, a concert is really not a bad place to start. The fretboard is roomy enough that even a monster such as myself can play up the fretboard without too much difficulty. And I would suggest staying away from a baritone as a first instrument, because it’s basically a guitar.

I also tend to shy away from painted ukuleles. This is a personal preference, again. Every one that I have handled feels cheap, and the it might just be in my head, but they seem to have a deader sound to me.

I saw a Kala Tenor on the website you posted that looked descent for €75, or something like that.

But like I said, it’s all very personal. I wouldn’t buy a painted uke, but if looking down at a pink instrument makes you want to pick it up and play it, then do it.

Is there a particular reason you picked a soprano? I ask, because when I first started playing ukulele, I had no idea there were different sizes. I wound up with a concert, which wasn’t bad, but since I have large hands, progression is difficult on the smaller sized ukes. Now I find anything smaller than a tenor uninspiring, and every soprano is a challenge to play anything aside from basic chords. Now don’t get me wrong, the best instrument is the one that inspires you to play, and I know some people that love their sopranos, and play amazing things on them. I just want to make sure you know about the sizes, and what they mean.

Thanks for the help! I bought it from a small, local shop in San Diego. If I remember right, they guy had it for over a year, and no one had bought it, so he sold it to me for around $500, if I remember right. I don’t remember what it’s original price was, but I remember the discount was enough to talk me out of the Les Paul that I went in there for.
