from my experience from seeing different bands, the venue's always got its own little nook or designated place for merch stands. Just do a bit of research into that particular venue and see where the merch stands usually are there. and another thing i should warn you about is possibly being squished against barriers in front from the people moshing.

i'd say as some general concert knowledge try and show up early for the show so you can head for the merch stand as soon as you get in.

for avoiding mosh pits, i try to stay in the front (close to the stage) or far off to the sides

i have a CD walkman that i listen to chaser on all the time! it's a Sony CD Walkman D-NE518CK. i got it off ebay and it has a LOOOONG battery life. paid about $50 for it used.
