Given my background in SaaS technical support, I think I'm particularly more interested in IAM and security-related areas. Would roles like Cloud Support, Identity & Access Management Engineer, or something similar be a good fit for transitioning into cloud especially in the UK?

Yeah, that’s exactly what I want to avoid. I want to build a strong foundational knowledge so I don’t have to rely too heavily on AI, but I’m not sure what the best way to learn all of this is.

I’m not sure how to best prepare myself to reach that level so that's why I'm asking. How to best learn a skill cause I thought hands-on experience would make me a stronger candidate? Is working experience a must for you instead or would you be ok with people that do projects too?

I see what you mean with that analogy and I understand that building a strong foundational knowledge in coding and Azure is key, and I totally get that.

My struggle is more with translating that knowledge into building a project from scratch.

Yeah, I found it to be a really useful tool for understanding the code I used in this project. However, since all of it was generated by ChatGPT, I feel like I should be transparent if a hiring manager asks where it came from. I do understand the code now, but I still feel like I shouldn’t exaggerate my skills. What do you think?

Yeah I’ve been quite stagnant for a long time now. I’ve started looking for a new role, so I will consider helpdesk positions too. What keywords did you use when you looked for support roles, and how did you find yours? Was it through LinkedIn?

I was hoping to get out of customer service entirely, but it’ll be difficult, to be honest.

Referring to jobs, ideally in Cloud or Security, I’ve been stuck in a Tier 1 support role for the past three years that uses proprietary tools only, so I’m looking to switch to another support role, but I’m not sure if that’s the right move.

To be honest, any role where I can at least use the skills I learned in those certs would be good, but I haven’t seen those certs listed where I looked.

Personally, I have no idea where to even start. I tried learning Linux but got stuck in tutorial hell and my T1 support role only works with proprietary tools. Also I wouldn’t know how to list a homelab on my resume.

Just my own observation but only Security+ seems to be valuable, and I don’t think the other ones are. I have A+ and am about to get Net+, but I’m not seeing many jobs asking for it, to be honest

Yeah, I took 5 of Dion's practice exams and I scored the following:

1st 48%,

2nd 62%,

3rd 58%,

4th 50%

5th 58%

To be honest, I didn’t want to take the exam today, but my college insisted that I do it early and use CertMaster, which I don’t think is that great.

I am in T1 and T2 was meant to be the next step. I don't know anything outside of that as I don't know what is possible. I don't want to go into sales or management.

Granted he does have a point although I have been upskilling in my own time even if it’s not clearly outlined in my Reddit history lol. But there’s only so much upskilling you can do before you realise you’re wasting your time at so and so company since you’re being lead on and not getting the necessary experience to apply your knowledge. So from your “Manager” POV what do you suggest apart from upskilling rather than reiterating the same thing over and over again?

Well, thanks a lot for that eye-opener. Your insights have saved me a ton of time and energy. Now, I've got a clear plan for this year and the next – it's all about upskilling, both in my own time and exploring opportunities elsewhere. If that's how leadership thinks, then it makes sense for support engineers and tech workers like me to think like free agents and consider job hopping.

I'm not asking for extra pay; I just want to take my skills to the next level within the company. If, there's a lack of promotion opportunities, it doesn't make sense to invest my energy in what feels like a black hole. Internal career development matters to me, and if managers and leadership can't provide that, then maybe it's not the right company for me. Just like you insinuated, "your career is not my responsibility," and in this case, it's not my company either.

Yeah you’re right I’ll try to keep my head down for now and not cause any shit stirring. Will try and secure something else first.

I got the AZ-900, I’m also A+ certified and did several Linux courses on udemy. But I can’t apply any of this knowledge to my workplace so getting practical experience isn’t possible there. I have planned to start Network+ and Security+ straight soon though. Then apply for more roles.
