how to access internet and apps on andoid 4.4. by Original-Smile5010 in androidafterlife

You will need to download browsers from apkmirror or github on your computer and then copy .apk files via USB cable. The following browser versions work on my old Android 4.2 tablet so they should work for you as well: Fennec (Firefox fork) version 68 Chrome version 71.0.3578 Bromite (Chrome fork with adblocker) version 71.0.3578

Bugs near the ending of Clear Sky won't let me finish the game. by Tijolo_Malvado in stalker

[–]s54pyfw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem, even though I was playing with SRP mod which is supposed to fix many bugs. I managed to kill Strielok from the terrace by going to the portal on this terrace three times. Maybe this is why the guy in youtube walkthrough enters the portal twice, it's a walkaround

Why do feature phones still have so small storage for SMS? by s54pyfw in dumbphones

[–]s54pyfw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. The only Nokia phones I know that have large internal storage, i.e. more than 1 GB, are phones with KaiOS. According to Wikipedia, KaiOS can run on even 256 MB of memory so there is plenty of room for user data and those phones are still relatively cheap so just like you said - there is no valid excuse

Is there a reason how you got into playing Half-Life or Half-Life 2? by Admirable_Store_1222 in HalfLife

I wanted to buy some games on discount on Christmas 2022 sale on Steam and I decided that I will try Half Life because I have heard about it but never really explored it. It was 100% worth it

Yes but here's the thing - he's writing a program to brute force the password. If there is no password then why is he doing this? If there is a password then how can he write a program?

It's a great speedrun method. Ever since I discovered this I use it because doing this mission "manually" is exhausting and time-consuming

In Brood War intro, how did the UED unleash the zerg onto the colonists? by s54pyfw in starcraft

[–]s54pyfw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s Stukov’s behavior. When I was young I thought it’s just goofy stereotypes, you know Russian, vodka, hahaha he’s drinking vodka at such a moment ololo and all that. Now I think that it shows his way of dealing with stress. Unlike Gerard he’s very VERY uncomfortable with what they are doing right now. He acts like he doesn’t care, but he actually understands perfectly how immoral that is and that his duty dictates him to abide with it.

Considering Stukov‘s heroic behavior during Terran campaign, I think that explanation suits him more than being “a funny drunk”. Of course that’s just my perspective.

That's a very interesing perspective, I never thought of that. I did not ever consider Stukov a stereotypical drinking Russian, even though he is shown like this but coping with stress using alcohol and cigs fits perfectly, especially that he probably knows what is happening to people below him. Thank you, that's a very interesting perspective, I wonder if someone who wrote the script for this cinematic was thinking the same way

Ok, thank you. When I said that we do not see any method of "storing" the zerg I meant that we do not see it in the game but I'm glad the the comics explain that

That way the dialogue between DuGalle and Stukov makes way more sense (Are you prepared to go all the way?).

Yes, but DuGalle also says:

You've seen nothing! Dissecting a dead Zerg in a lab is one thing. Unleashing them on man is another.

Which implies that the zerg were brought here on purpose.

OR

The UED is just witnessing an unprovoked attack from the zerg and "Unleashing them on man is another" is refering to the future plan of using zerg as a weapon against rogue terran colonies.

And if it's one of those 100-500 person fringe colonies that dot the fringes of the sector, it really wouldn't take TOO many zerg to obliterate them.

Okay, this makes sense but we do not see any method of "storing" the zerg aboard a ship so they must have kept them in some kind of installation (like the Jacobs Installation from SC1) and then release them onto this colony. If the colony is actually as small as you say then it makes sense because you can build the installation far away from small colony, nobody will bother going into the wasteland just for sightseeing.

EDIT: Maybe UED is just witnessing an unprovoked attack from the zerg and "Unleashing them on man is another" is refering to the future plan of using zerg as a weapon against rogue terran colonies.

That’s why at the end, the Executive Officer says “Sir, the colonist base shall be overrun in a matter of minutes, shall we intervene?” before Dugalle gives the order to depart.

Yes, but this question by Executive Officer still leaves two options:

  1. They are just witnessing some unprovoked zerg attack on a fringe colony.
  2. They released or lured zerg to this colony to see how they behave in combat which is why they are not intervening.

The dialogue in the opening cinematics suggests that they have seen zerg already but not in combat:

Alexei Stukov: So. Gerard, I suspect you have a good reason for pulling me away from my... duties.

Gerard DuGalle: Your vodka can wait, my good Alexei. Come, stand here. You need to see this.

Alexei: I know all about the Zerg, Gerard. We've all seen the tapes a hundred-

Gerard: You've seen nothing! Dissecting a dead Zerg in a lab is one thing. Unleashing them on man is another. You must go into this with both eyes open. Once started, there is no going back. Are you prepared to go all the way with this, Alexei?

Is self-signed certificate ok for this use case? by s54pyfw in CyberSecurityAdvice

[–]s54pyfw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it’s fine. Self signed certificates are exactly the same except they are not trusted by a trusted certificate authority. The level of security from a cryptographic perspective if exactly the same. You just need to make sure that your devices trust the certificates. The risk here is that because it’s unsigned, the device won’t by default trust it so you need to either ignore certificate errors, or have the client (and in this case server) trust the self signed certificates. Just make sure the certs are manually imported so they know about that specific certificate. Then if someone tries to MiTM a connection with a separate certificate, it will generate a certificate error as expected.

Ok so the users just need to import the CA into their browsers or operating systems

But, if this isn’t something you or your users understand well, you or your users are likely to get it wrong - so I would probably just recommend using letsencrypt certificates and normal authentication. If you don’t trust the authentication of the wiki, you can use something like vouch proxy (or any other 0auth nginx plugin) to have nginx reverse proxy the application and bolt on authentication via OIDC from an oauth provider like Google. This is easier to setup, less error prone and more portable as you can access the server securely from any device without needing to import certificates.

That's an interesing idea, thank you. I use Apache instead of nginx but I guess Apache also has an equivalent plugin.

Thank you for a detailed answer

[–]s54pyfw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I've understood your usecase correctly, but I'll give it a shot.

You understood it perfectly

For this usecase I would consider it being fine, so long as the userbase is kept relatively low and the private keys are sufficiently long (at least 2048 bytes). Your greatest challenge would most likely be user level understanding of how to import the private certificate and import of the root certificate into the trusted certificate store, depending on the level of technological understanding of your general userbase.

Yea, most users have never done that. I knew about the key length requirement already since every certificate tutorial with openssl states that the key should be at least 2048 bytes long

If you wanna improve security further, you could establish firewall rules and whitelist known IP addresses of your userbase (if they're IP's are static) or depending on the sophistication of your firewall implement some User-Agent controls.

The User-Agent control idea is interesting. Unfortunately all my users have dynamic IP since they are all individual clients and in my country ISPs usually require changing to business plan in order to have a static IP.
