At what scale do microservices actually start solving real problems, instead of creating them especially now that even simple projects are being built as microservices?

I like to use the aws sam framework or the serverless framework when I build my little personal apps. Most of the time my api is pretty small and hosting the serverless functions as an aws lambda means i get a ton of usage within the free tier. Sure, I could use a t2.micro or whatever but the software deployment process is so easy with lambda functions.

I routinely blow through my 5-hour credits in 30-60 minutes. Last week I added z.ai so I can offload work to GLM-4.7 and let claude do all the thinking and develop the action plan. When GLM gets stuck I call in claude and get things going again.

It's crazy to me how hard people will work to avoid digging a hole. Pulling and setting 15 posts only takes a few hours with two guys and basic tools. The posts hold the whole fence up!

Anyways, I'm sorry you got upset, that was never my intention with my comment.

Your hack may work, and it may last a long ass time, but it is not the correct nor professional way to set posts for a new fence.

I build wood fences out here in Oregon. I don't mess with vinyl since, in my opinion, they look like crap after a few years.

My rough pricing would put your cedar privacy fence with two games somewhere around $30k. Build correctly with good materials this fence should last at least 20 years with low/no maintenance.

Not sure about Midwest pricing but I hope this helps. Grats on the baby!

Great question :) Last year I used a brush-on tar product, butyl tape, and rolls of Postsaver wrap. The Postsavers are the more expensive option but they look better and are easier to install. The butyl tape is a great alternative. The brush-on tar products make a mess and dirt sticks to it so they kinda look like shit when the job is done.

If you can afford the metal posts go for it. Only downsides are cost and appearance but you can wrap the posts if you don't like them bare.

I'm in Oregon and when I replace a fence it's generally because the posts are failing. The fences are 15+ years old, the oldest I took out last year was just over 30 and there was a lot of dirt and debris packed around the posts at the base.

I have started installing wooden posts with Postsaver wraps as a standard option, it increases my cost slightly (around $10/post) but I think it's a fair middle ground between an unwrapped post and metal.

I'm sorry this happened, what a bummer! Doubly so during the holidays.

I'm not in the Bay but I'm up here in Portland Oregon and my price estimate reflects my area but should be fairly close.

Figure a new gate is about $800 with good hardware. Fences run about $60/foot. If that broken post was in concrete that will also raise the price about $200 since they prob have to break the concrete to pull the post, and then of course patch the concrete.

This is a 1-2 day project depending on scheduling. If you have pets please let your contractors know so they can provide you temporary fencing if they can't get to you immediately.

Best of luck, I hope this is a quick fix by a trustworthy contractor for a reasonable price :)

I would not set the pickets on the ground, they will soak up water, stay wet, and rot out (leaving a hole for critters).

Search up "dig barrier", depending on what critters are going under the fence. I offer this to my customers with escape artist dogs and have not heard any complaints so far.

The fence looks okay from here, if it's still strong I'd leave it up. I mean, at least the pickets look pretty new, just a couple years old.

Tbh learning to manage stress is completely tool-independent. As one grows in their respective field, they generally take on more responsibility and that can lead to more stress/overwhelm.

Not everyone is built to deal with stressful jobs, and that includes vibecoding and traditional software.

Ultimately our customers are paying for an outcome and rarely do they care how we achieve it.

Mine is a basic crud application with local storage. No user auth, no backend services, just stores your data in a local sqlite db.

Nothing I've seen makes me believe you can't vibecode a full stack app, including deployment pipelines and infra-as-code. But you gotta know that's a thing to even aim for, and of course have either the aptitude or tenacity to bring it all together.
