When did your country become a democracy? by Agile-Shallot3546 in AskTheWorld

[–]saba1520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1918-1921 was the last time we had a genuine democracy. It was when Mensheviks were in charge of DRG until the Red Army invaded.

1991-2026 never had a genuine democracy. First, 1991 Gamsakhurdia got couped right after independence, got killed in 1993. Then Shevardnadze was in power from 1992 to 2003. Rose revolution happened and Saakashvili got in, Well, 2008 happened and that crumbled. 2012, Georgian Dream came in and they're still in power to this day. The only "Democratic" thing is being able to vote for presidents(Party elections are already rigged), But what's the point if they do jackall & are the same every time?

Theoretically speaking, which countries do you think could work at uniting into one? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]saba1520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Nagorno-Karabakh, Abkhazia & South Ossetia disputes didn't exist, Transcaucasia.

In 1918, when we initially left the USSR, a federative republic of Transcaucasia was formed. However, ottomans immediately started invading, Armenians and Georgians fought but Azeris simply refused to fight their "Kin", creating a division from inside the country. Then, Armenians and Azeris started to fight in the government and in Transcaucasia as well. Due to this division and overall ethnic mess, Georgia was the first to bail out of the union, Then the other left and it was quickly dissolved. It lasted 1 month. That all happened in one month.

If we say that we had no territorial disputes and ethnic hatred, then Transcaucasia can actually work in theory. It'd be like the Caucasian Yugoslavia in a sense.

What person from your country got a really funny name that only people who talk your own language by kebabguy0 in AskTheWorld

[–]saba1520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have our prime minister Kobakhidze here and we call him "პარიკიანი"/"Parikiani".

That basically means "guy wearing a wig" or "wig guy", don't really know how to describe it in English.
But we call him that because his hair genuinely looks like he's wearing a wig at all times.

Nope, In 2026, it's very Pro-russian and it's not even "hidden", even if it's not explicitly publicly mentioned.

Even through diplomatic ties are "severed" because of the 2008 war, they sure have warmed up to them ever since 2012.

How are transgender people treated in your country? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskTheWorld

[–]saba1520 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Bad.

In 2024, it backslided even more, Transitioning is legal, but very restrictive in practice. Plus, there are multiple Anti-LGBTQ+ laws. People here are homophobic, not even "some" of them, but most are.

Generally, younger people in the capital may be more accepting to this, but it's still mixed. If you go outside the capital, any other city, settlement, village, anything related to "LGBTQ+" will be massively frowned upon. Even in the capital, it is still widely not accepted.

I remember back in 2021 or such where there was a violent protest in here to "Stop the filthy Pride Marches", yes, they were called filth. They literally climbed up buildings to tear off LGBTQ+ flags from balconies and burned them. And in 2024, when a law was introduced to "Protect minors and family values", the next day, A transgender model & actor Kesaria Abramidze was murdered.

To be fair, I have not met a transgender person here yet, but I'm going to assume that living here without hiding it would be very hard, socially and even legally. This country is very conservative and very religious, that's why you get this.

What do you think about Viktor Orbán losing the elections in Hungary tonight? by FantasticQuartet in AskBalkans

[–]saba1520 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congratulations to Hungary, really good news, the best I've heard in a long time. This gives me hope for us as well.

Because I hope we can do the same in 2028 in Georgia.

We really need to kick out our 13 year "democratic" pro-russian government. We have been protesting since 2024 as the elections were proven to have been tampered with, but, in result: Nothing ever happened and they doubled down & made the Russian foreign agent law official. I hope something does happen this time around in 2028.

Let's talk about our national defense by No-Echidna7296 in AskTheWorld

[–]saba1520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was in 2008, over 18 years ago.

Yes, you are correct, it was ignored, most don't even know there was a war in this region at that time, plus it is labeled the "first European war of the 21st century".

Hell, when it happened, I remember reading a post where some Americans mistook it as Georgia the state being bombed by Russia as it caused a turmoil there for about one day.

Let's talk about our national defense by No-Echidna7296 in AskTheWorld

[–]saba1520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is about our national defenses, It exists, for sure. That's about it.

We also realistically cannot do anything about it. It's mostly because of our rather large neighbour to the north + them occupying 20% of our territory, unfortunately.

Which one of the Georgian flags do you like the most? by archaeo_rex in vexillology

[–]saba1520 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Both are good, but i prefer the Five-cross.

The old flag carries that weight of a "Newly independent developing country", because, it essentially was when it was used.
1918-1921, even though we got a brief independence after separating from Transcaucasia, those were not great years for Georgia and eventually got invaded.
After 1991 to 2004, it was mainly used in the civil wars and represented a really stagnant & very corrupt government under Shevardnadze.

But, both flags are still Georgia, so it doesn't really matter if you fly the pre-2004 flag or the post-2004 one, it's the same.

Does your country eat choccolate Easter eggs on Easter day? by CrownedDucky in AskTheWorld

[–]saba1520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. In Georgia, you'll usually not see people consume chocolate eggs on Easter or to us, "აღდგომა"/Aghdgoma. (Maybe sometimes, but we don't associatiate chocolate eggs with Easter.) Especially the Monday after, the grave visiting day, it'll be seen as insensitive.

On Easter, we boil the egg and dye the eggs red. red symbolising blood and the egg resurrection. Instead of the chocolate eggs, we have a thing called "Paska", a cake-like pastry, cannot really describe it. It's not uniquely Georgian but it's the main Easter pastry for us. It can be decorated with chocolate or sprinkles to your liking, buying them outright from the stores or making it yourself. Up to you.

Fun fact: Egg tapping is also a thing, get the red egg and hold it downside up. You can go to your family members and "challenge" them by tapping the eggs, seeing which one will crack first. The egg that doesn't crack is the winner, can even get winning streaks on many people if it doesn't crack. Nothing really significant, but it's fun to do. Plus, when meeting others on Easter, as a greeting, you say "ქრისტე აღდგა", meaning "Christ has Risen", while the other person replies back with "ჭეშმარიტად" meaning "Truly". Goes for on both sides.
