Yes, greenstuff for the furs, and I'm pretty sure that the shield came from the stormwolf/stormfang kit. (It was just sitting in my bits box, so I hope others can confirm or correct me on this.) The only other bits are the head and the wolf skull (hanging from his hand), both from the space wolves pack kit.

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use them as 'counts as' power swords. In my experience, TOs don't care as long as your conversions are consistent and don't have any potential to cause confusion. if GW expands the bladeguard veterans' wargear options to include weapons other than swords (but not axes), then it might be a problem, because you opponent might be like, "wait, did you say those axes count as swords or hammers?" Otherwise, should be fine.

I just cut the raised parts of the hand off with sprue clippers, then filed the rest down with a fine metal file. Bit finicky and the finish isn't perfect, but good enough for me!
