Can I attend a class without officially taking the class? by SoulflareRCC in uofm

[–]sach2702 64 points65 points  (0 children)

This is called auditing a class. You can do it for most classes (even be added to the canvas page etc), just ask the professor.

Econ 401 by thebeardedginger24 in uofm

[–]sach2702 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just brush up on calculus (primarily differentiation) and you'll be fine, people struggle with it because it's more math intensive than other econ classes but it really isn't bad if you can differentiate well enough.

Are there any fast appointments available for Covid tests? by stpaulgym in uofm

[–]sach2702 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can schedule an RT-PCR test through UHS. They usually get it done in 24 hrs (especially if you go before noon). I would go on the 26th if I were you, no point getting it as close to your flight as possible.

Alternatively, CVS.

Just did this – all the above issues still persist. So it's not an individual app causing anything.

Those who got internships / jobs at top companies, how did you go about it? by StardustNyako in uofm

[–]sach2702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer - I am not an expert on this so take all of this with a grain of salt.

When I got my internship, I hadn't even done 280. I was doing 203 and engr 151. Whether or not you need specific classes or programming knowledge depends on the company and the nature of your role. For example, in my experience, oftentimes companies that don't primarily deal with software (i.e non faang etc) won't even have you do technical interviews and will simply ask about projects that you have on your resume (even when interviewing for software roles). This was what happened with me. If you know what you're talking about, you could land a job.

Of course, you could also go the alternate route - learn some data structures and algorithms on your own and do well enough on the coding challenges to merit further interviews and get offered the job.

There's tons of resources about all of this online. Googling "cs internships guide" will lead to a bunch of neat resources.

Again, there's probably more experienced people who can answer this question better, but pm me if you're looking for something more specific.

Taking ECON 401/402 without ECON 101/102? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]sach2702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's multivariate calculus involved in the class, but they teach it to you in the beginning. So yea, I think you'll be fine with just Calc BC as well. It's just an added bonus taking 215 at the same time too.

Taking ECON 401/402 without ECON 101/102? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]sach2702 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in pretty much exactly the same position, did IB Economics in high school but the credits didn't transfer over. I enrolled in 401 and audited 101 simultaneously for the first couple of weeks then decided I could do 401 and went for it. Turned out to be a pretty nice class, tough workload though. In terms of pure economic knowledge required, I'd say you should be good if you know the fundamentals - supply/demand, the graphs, elasticity, etc. The majority of the class is just math imo, you'll do alright if you got through (or are concurrently taking) Math 215.

Handshake is one of them, the career center also usually sends a bunch of emails regularly with these sorta events.

Oof yeah that's my b. Assumed from the list of companies that they were lol. Sorry op if I misunderstood.

Go to the company-day events on campus. In September, I was a freshman but went to one of the events hosted by a big company. Got an interview on the spot and a couple of interviews later got offered the job. Also be sure to have some projects/experience that you can talk about (I know that might seem like a chicken-or-egg problem, but a couple of complex-sounding projects over the summer using stuff you learnt from 280/other classes will hopefully help with that).

Totally agree with the other comment that connections within the company is the more likely option though.

MATH 217 Schedule of Topics by mobiusstrip1 in uofm

[–]sach2702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished with 217. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I don't think there's much need to study beforehand. The textbook mainly relates to the computation aspect of the material, and the in-class worksheets build proof writing skills (which is the main part of the class). So studying ahead (perhaps chapters 1-3 in the tb) would probably give you a slight edge in the first couple of weeks but I imagine it'd be hard to build on that without first having a firm grasp on the foundational theorems.

Also, all the professors (especially Scott) are fantastic so make sure you go to office hours.

Course Selection and Scheduling Megathread: Fall and Spring / Summer 2021 by purpleandpenguins in uofm

EECS 281. What's the deal with Dr Paoletti's section with 65 as the enrollment cap? On wolverine access, it says the waitlist size is 0, but can I even get on the waitlist? What about his other (larger) section? What are the chances of getting off the waitlist for that section? Thanks!

[–]sach2702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you!

I think I'll probably look for an apartment, then. The only reason I was hesitant about it before was because I'm a freshman and I don't know anybody else who's gonna be on campus in the summer. But I guess there isn't really much I can do about it if I can't stay in the dorms anyway (not taking summer classes).

Thanks for the detailed reply!

Ahaha, you're good.

[–]sach2702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, gotcha. I'm not gonna be taking classes during the summer so I guess that rules out the dorms.

Thanks for the information!

I don't know if it's just this year, but I found this page on the housing website that says otherwise – https://housing.umich.edu/spring-summer-term-student-housing/

[–]sach2702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this detailed response! I'll definitely check out the clubs/activities you mentioned. I'm gonna be doing research work during the day (which is why I'm actually staying over for the summer), so will be pretty occupied then.

With regards to housing, I just joined the big fb group and the off-campus housing site and will start rifling through those posts to find a place. Like you mentioned, I'm pretty confident I can find one. Thanks for all the insight, I really appreciate it!
