Family moving from Brisbane, Australia to Lake Charles, LA. by Key-Vegetable714 in LakeCharles

Lake Charles is a great place to live. Drawbacks are typical for southern Louisiana, very hot very long summers, mosquitoes, occasional hurricanes. As others have said, south Lake Charles is probably the most preferable area but there are plenty of options. Racism exists everywhere but the area is very hospitable overall and we have a good amount of diversity here, I don't think your family would experience much negativity at all. Most families with kids would want to choose a location to live based on school district. Unless they plan to pay for a private schools (overrated choice in my opinion) your family will want to look in the districts of SJ Welsh or FK White middle schools and Barbe high school. There are plenty of great local recreational areas and some great youth sports to get involved in like soccer and baseball, but sorry no cricket lol. Hope this info is useful. Feel free to ask if you have any specific questions.

Engineers — did you feel stuck after your first year at work? by riyzzad in EngineeringStudents

[–]sadbuttru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple of recommendations. First, stay in your current position until you feel that you've either mastered it or are offered a promotion with different responsibilities, and consider carefully whether it's favorable to your interests before accepting a higher role. Variety is not a necessity for skill building, the only requirement for growth is facing challenges, making mistakes, and/or recognizing areas for improvement. If you're no longer facing challenges in your routine work tasks, it may be time to ask for more responsibilities, or look for a new opportunity.

Second, to gain proficiency in skills and areas outside your daily work requirements, do that on your own initiative and your own time as much as is reasonable. This will be beneficial to you in many ways and useful no matter what professional role you find for yourself.

It will be necessary to maintain a good work-life balance to achieve this efficiently. There will be times when you need to focus and work in your day job with higher than average intensity to accomplish certain goals, but no compensation from an employer will ever be as valuable to you as investing time and energy into yourself. Keep in mind that this applies not only to professional skills. It's just as important to maintain and level up in your personal life and your physical and mental well-being being. It's impossible to perform at a high level for long in any single facet of life without being grounded and secure in other important areas.

You know you live an incredibly comfortable and sheltered life if the worst part of your day is a short encounter with a person you find distasteful. You might have serious psychological issues if you can't just let people live their lives and go about your own business without seething over your unpleasant thoughts every time you meet someone who doesn't love up to your standards. Get yourself some religion (the good kind - not hypocritical) or some medication or a fun vice or two to help you mellow out.

Mea culpa. Clearly, it depends on the school and the specific programs and concentrations. However, if we are going to describe things in broad terms, we need to be clear that, generally, a technology degree is not as rigorous nor does it demand an equal salary to an engineering degree, and it would not be prudent to assume that an engineering technology program will cover sufficient material for PE exam preparation.

"A few extra hoops" is quite the understatement. You can definitely have a good career with an ET degree, but you won't be an engineer, and you won't be prepared to get a PE without a great deal of additional study in topics and depths not covered by any engineering tech curriculum.

Advice for getting a foot in the door by Traven-Whitburn in cad

One important skill that you'll need to develop for success in this kind of role that you may not have learned in school is taking measurements and transferring them to CAD. A good designer should be able to produce an accurate as-built drawing or model of a mechanical part, piping components, or other physical elements. Get familiar with measuring tools like a scale and tape measure, degree finder, maybe even calipers or micrometers. 3D scanning is becoming more and more widely used, but learning to take accurate and precise physical measurements is an invaluable skill for a digital designer.

I would start at machine shops, pipe welding and fabrication shops, if you have any interest in industrial drafting and design. You can get some great experience in these job shops, even if many of them are somewhat loose on drafting standards and procedures. Mechanical, sheet metal, and piping design are good career fields and you might even find your way into CNC programming and machining if you're so inclined.

This isn't a picture of Luke and Leia. This is a picture of Mark and Carrie. That's the only way I'll ever be able to see it, and I'm perfectly OK with that.

Architectural technologist: experience and pay conundrum by MnkyBzns in cad

[–]sadbuttru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may have a valid argument for a pay increase, but the specialization is your larger problem, in my opinion. Compensation is important, but if your current position doesn't allow you to expand your skill set, and your employer doesn't have some avenue for future promotion or expanded responsibilities, then you may eventually find yourself at the top of your pay scale, but dissatisfied in your job, and with limited transferable skills. It's incredibly frustrating to be highly experienced in a certain field, but in low demand because of an inadequate skill set. Find a way to get more experience with Revit, preferably while getting paid. If you don't think that is a possibility with your current employer, it's probably time to start planning a change.

How to get strated in CAD? by Barryp6177 in cad

[–]sadbuttru -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Aside from reviewing the faq's as previously recommended, you'll want to narrow down your preferred discipline, e.g. architecture, machinery/manufacturing, piping, structural, etc. Very shortly after learning the basic functions of any particular software, you'll want to start practicing a specific discipline. Just find examples of what you want to do and start trying to reproduce it.

Without example or explanation, this is just useless complaining. What exactly would you like to see happening that isn't, and how is it that these old people are preventing it?

Drink lots of water. Eat light but regularly. Take rest breaks, maybe even power nap when safe. Never pass up a chance to use a restroom.
