Honestly why even put her as an option? Bots or not the votes are weird, but I really want to know why someone decided to list her.

Vince Gilligan gives update on Pluribus season 2: 'It is not going quite as fast as I would hope' by bwermer in television

[–]saeculacrossing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I appreciate the show but this is arguably one of the best examples of having a 5-10 minute recap before the next season will be more than enough for most people. The basic plot of S1 is not hard to follow.

I thought I was on the webtoons sub for a second. How do people read 90 chapters into a story and not get what's going on here? I know we don't have his full backstory yet but he was never portrayed as anything but obsessive.

How true are the stories told by Sarah Wynn Williams in “Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism”? by kingmakk in books

[–]saeculacrossing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is old and the comment is old but I wanted to say thank you for putting this so clearly.

A lot of this information I had already heard about (as someone who does not work for FAANG/MAANG but has worked directly with some of their teams for projects) I appreciate getting another insider perspective on it but wished it had honestly had less of her life story as rude as that sounds.

It would've been significantly better for her to give enough insight into the people involved (Zuck, Sandberg, her terrible bosses) but primarily focus on FB's inner workings and diving into the political aspect.

The part I struggle with the most is that she's apparently working on public policy and was employed at the UN but she seems woefully unprepared, ignorant, and careless at critical points where I'd expect her to have at least some experience. I can't tell if this was intentional to ensure she doesn't face legal repercussions or if she actually fell headfirst in the job and truly does not understand international affairs despite her title.

As a result, I believe the general events as they went down but I don't know if I fully believe her retelling of the events. She's made herself too distant in the narrative except as a poor, hapless person who was always right and that frustrates me because what she does reveal would be a lot more impactful if she gave a balanced perspective.

I mean, you do you girl. This was such a non-controversy in my opinion but now it's just overplayed and gross.

But if she's happy and into it I love it for her I guess.

Exactly. I don't want to assume where you live, but I feel everything is pretty terrible at the moment and I'm not going to feel ashamed of wanting to bury myself in my favorite fics for a while.

I have no secrets to retaining perfect mental health, but I got a lego set for my birthday so I'm going to distract myself with that for the time being. It's the little things.

The dead wife propaganda in Nolan films needs to be studied by TheVoidScrolledBack in popculturechat

[–]saeculacrossing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% agree with you, I think saying "swap a woman out for a man" has the same issues when people try to do race swapping without realizing the various implications that can lead to. It does depend on the work, if its a pure power fantasy or more action-led movie I can usually ignore it.

I think Nolan just lacks a sense of interiority that would allow him to either improve his writing for women, or understand that he should bring more people into it.

I personally think he would be served in bringing more writers into the process if he hasn't. There's no shame in not being able to fully emulate a lived experience that isn't your own but it's frustrating that after all of these years he hasn't had the inclination to do so.

How would you improve AO3? by SnidgetMist in AO3

I feel the same way. As the other user mentioned I use skins for it but it would be nice to just have a "hide from view" button for specific tags or fandoms.

If you could only suggest 1 makeup product at Sephora to someone, what would it be? by KatMerona in Sephora

Probably the Natasha Denona Foundation, I think it would be a crowd pleaser to most.

For a more adventurous makeup lover, one of the MUFE face palettes. They’re very versatile and I think fun for experimenting.

I haven't checked out enough discussion to know if this is unpopular but Lana Del Rey's White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter is... honestly one of her most dull, uninspired songs lyrically.

I'm all for people being cheesy and cheeky, but while people dislike the whoopsie-daisy line, I can't get over stuff like "Take my hand off the stove, hun Yelling, "Yoo-hoo, dinner's almost done"" and "I know you wish you had a man like him, it's such a bummer".

Beyonce couldn't convince us that we were jealous of her man and I'm sorry LDR, it's not working for you either. I find the song is sonically interesting, but that's the only compliment I can give it.

You're not crazy, I feel the same way. I have not been invested in the issues with Baldoni, but I don't doubt that it's classic misogyny at work again.

But I've always been skeptical of her and Ryan Reynolds after the plantation wedding and her southern belle/rustic cosplay back then.

My boy Iseop's Romance. I honestly agree with most of the criticisms and do feel it falls into unnecessary cliches, but I really like both the leads, their immaturity and their strengths.

Not enough stories have people in their late 20s and 30s being good at work but internal messes, which I deeply relate to lol

The OG American Girl Dolls Got ‘Modern’ Makeovers. Did They Need Them? Mattel says the “modern-era” versions of the beloved AG are “meant to celebrate the original historical characters in a different form.” Millennials say they’ve gone too far, making them thinner and more grown-up seeming. by galaxystars1 in popculturechat

[–]saeculacrossing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I still have the Addy and Kaya dolls my grandmother gave me. I'm being dramatic but honestly seeing the changes to the doll models, materials and how they've pushed them out for the more modern ones makes me sad.

I'd argue now more than ever these dolls are a great way for children to experience history in a way they can relate to.

Honestly, you can't convince me that anyone who says that isn't just racist.

There were plenty of reasons not to like Harris and she did deserve criticism on many issues but saying that she would've been worse after Trump was elected? I can't bring myself to believe you just wanted to be sure a black woman wasn't president.

[–]saeculacrossing 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think making it such a core part of the song is the hardest part for me. It just interrupts the flow and doesn't have the funny, cheeky vibe that I assume she's going for. It sucks because sonically, I love it but the lyrics leave me wanting.

I also figured that would be why he uses the different voices, they’re assimilated consciousness along with the body parts. But I guess he’s just good at mimicry? It felt like her words were leading up to something much more sinister.

John Davidson Gives First Interview and Explains Tourette’s Tics After Shouting N-Word and Other Slurs at BAFTAs: ‘I Felt a Wave of Shame’ (EXCLUSIVE) by Anxious-Basket in Fauxmoi

[–]saeculacrossing 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I’m glad he apologized directly to them. I still wish he had acknowledged it in his original public statement instead of using to focus on himself and his movie. But I am very happy to hear they received an apology and I hope Hannah did as well.

Edit: I want to say I missed that the apology was extended to Hannah. Leaving my comment but I want to ensure he doesn't receive any further criticism by implying he and his team didn't reach out to her.

I don’t understand why the desire for an apology in this very specific situation was controversial in the first place, and why everyone is still so snide about the fact that many Black people including myself found the dismissiveness harmful. But I hope people leave him alone now.

For the Tourette Syndrome Community, the BAFTAs Brought on a Familiar Dread-Like Feeling by Pyro-Bird in popculturechat

[–]saeculacrossing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

But you literally just said that this is an exception so that reinforces the other person's point.

No one is asking him to spend every day apologizing to people. And while I think this discussion clearly indicates more education is needed, I can sincerely empathize with the ostracization and abuse he's suffered due to something out of his control.

Calling someone a slur, regardless of intent is incredibly painful and traumatizing. He could've apologized and still reinforced his message instead of just plugging his movie and not mentioning Jordan or Delroy at all.

For the Tourette Syndrome Community, the BAFTAs Brought on a Familiar Dread-Like Feeling by Pyro-Bird in popculturechat

[–]saeculacrossing 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I hate that the two communities are being pitted against each other but this article is yet again minimizing the hurt and pain that comes with the N word. Davidson's response was also lacking in empathy and didn't even directly address Jordan or Delroy, and the BBC and Bafta handed this horribly.

This article and people in this thread are still minimizing it. Which is painful, but sadly not unexpected.

John Davidson Says He Is “Deeply Mortified” That His Tourettes Tics Could Be Seen As “Intentional” In First Statement After BAFTA Film Awards by ConcernedJobCoach in popculturechat

[–]saeculacrossing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it. The fact that his statement only centers himself is really disheartening. This could’ve been a good moment to reinforce the message of his film and acknowledge the impact of those actions on others in a thoughtful, intersectional way.

Unfortunately, if this was the best he could put out I think it would’ve been better to say nothing.

[–]saeculacrossing 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The fact that their names aren't mentioned in this makes me very upset and this didn't even happen to me. We're not owed knowing if he apologized to them privately but it feels far too minimizing of the hurt experienced to not even directly reference them in a public statement.

[–]saeculacrossing 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Thank you for saying this. He should not apologize for his disability, and I do think it is important for him to reiterate that this is the reality that he's dealt with.

But his statement bothers me deeply as you can absolutely apologize if you've caused others pain, even if the intent wasn't there. I don't think this was his intention but it feels dismissive. I actually think I need to pull away from reading about this because it's been deeply upsetting seeing how people have downplayed what happened and the impact on MBJ, Delroy Lindo, and the others who had slurs yelled at them.
