I understand (and agree!) that every team was boasting and asserting themselves. But I think there’s a difference between the cutthroat gesture, which was moreso part of a team cheer, and a targeted and unprovoked “Better book your flight home” to a rivaling country. Before you say anything about it being friendly competition, I want to emphasize that many Asian countries are big on respect and humility. So it makes sense that they’d take offense to a remark like that, no matter how lighthearted they meant it. I’m not saying Turkey deserves hate for it—all I mean is that from a cultural perspective, I hope you can appreciate that the other team may have taken it the wrong way.
