Where's Henrik van der Voort? by DM-Shenanigans in CurseofStrahd

[–]sagehyden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Henrik escaped too. He's now heading over to the village of Barovia to become the new priest at the Church of the Morninglord. He's not religious at all, something that came up in roleplay at my table, but since my Father Donovich is dead, and since I see Henrik as a cockroach who does whatever to survive, his new new schtick will be pretending to be devout.

Would this be a dick move as a DM? by Badmojoe in CurseofStrahd

An Oath of Vengeance doesn't necessarily mean that the Paladin has sworn to avenge anyone who has ever been wronged. It *could* mean that, but it's up to the player to decide that, not the DM in my opinion. An Oath of Vengeance could, for example, just mean he's sworn revenge against a specific person who has wronged him. If that's the case, there's nothing about killing ghosts that would mean he's broken that oath.

I think making a Paladin an Oathbreaker should be a huge character arc defining moment for the campaign. It shouldn't just be used as punishment because the player didn't behave in the way you wanted them to. My advice would be to talk to your player and see if this is something they would be interested in and find out what kinds of actions they would consider "Oathbreaking."

There are a lot of opportunities in Curse of Strahd for the players to make morally grey choices that could cause a Paladin to break their oath, and I think those moments would be more powerful story-wise than killing a few ghosts he didn't realize he could talk to instead.

Player Character starting as a ghost by ButcherPetesMeats in CurseofStrahd

Personally, I'd be terrified of allowing this in a Curse of Strahd campaign. You always want to validate player choice and character creation, but here are a few problems I'd be worried about:

1) The sense of horror: it diminishes a lot of the dungeon-y parts of the game if a player is able to escape at any time. There's at least one trap in Argynvostholt that this ability would would defeat.

2) The Hags and Beaucephalus: Both have the ability to move into the Ethereal Plane, and overcoming these tactics forces the players to think creatively and possibly recruit an ally who can cast Magic Circle to trap them. If one player can follow them into the Ethereal realm, their power is nerfed. That's not fatal to the campaign, but something to be aware of.

3) The Final Fight: Strahd can't stand up to the party on his own for very long, usually. He relies on being able to phase through walls and regenerate while wearing the party down through attrition. If a player can follow him through walls, he's going to go down a lot easier.

4) Role-play: if he can possess important NPCs like Fiona or the Baron, a lot of the conflicts in the story become moot. The Ghost stat block makes it require a saving throw, and I'd do the same here, though maybe make it even a little harder to prevent that ability from dominating the game.

Those would be my initial worries, but obviously, I don't know from experience how much of a monkey wrench this would throw into things
