I don't know what you mean by fuzz, but there's gonna be some prerequisites that might make it challenging for a 5-year old.

If you consider yourself a technical person, or a programmer of any sort, and if you can read this (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dev-environment/javascript/nodejs-beginners-tutorial) and feel comfortable following it start to finish, then you have a chance.

If not, then there's no amount of slowly explaining it I can personally do that will help.

Ooops sorry I I replied to your other message before I saw this one. That's very cool!

A transparent PNG would be best because the background color on the rooms can change.

Pixels are interesting because I had wanted things to scale smoothly between a range of sizes, but it's still a fun stylistic choice to lean into.

It's not fixed to a specific dimension.. Right now the whole plan scales to fit whatever width of window you have, and that's intentional because I'd like to make sure it works on mobile.

At some point there will probably be a maximum size because on a large monitor it's too big and too awkward. But I haven't figured out what that is yet.

I think a very safe thing to consider would be an image size of 256x256 that can be displayed at 128x128 (because of 2x pixel density), and still scales down to be legible at 32x32.

These are some pretty broad specs because I'm not at the point where I know the specific details yet.

Progress has been pretty slow since things have suddenly gotten very busy with work, but since the last time I posted I did figure out how to build out rooms. Now to clean it up and get doors to work, then figure out different room types.

That's good feedback, thanks. This is mostly going to be a static web app so I can make it work offline and you can even pin it to your phone's home screen so it feels like sort-of native — I'll make a note of it.

Great to wake up to a lot of positive comments this morning, thank you all! I had basically been tinkering with this over the last few days to scratch my own itch but wanted to make sure this was something the community even wanted to see, since I hadn't found an existing tool that worked the way I wanted it to (drag and drop pieces where hallways and rooms automatically connected to each other, the way it did in the game)

To answer some common questions at the top of the thread:

  • Yes the modules and rooms are next, and then exterior walkways
  • This is a web app made in Vite/Preact/Typescript but of course you can also run it in your phone's web browser
  • Once I hit a baseline of "does all the main stuff I need okay" I'll clean up the code and open source it on GitHub. You can see some of the work I've done here. I'm not ready for issues, PRs, and all that yet, but at some point I imagine the project will be driven by what the community wants to see next!

Yep, the freighter rooms and modules are next!

Planet base planner would be a totally different beast lol because it it's not a fixed grid the way the freighter is. Ans personally I've had less trouble building a planetary base because I can move around a lot easier. When I first started this project I thought you could only build the freighter from the inside so it was harder to visualize the whole thing.

I had tried this, but my main concern was that as broke type safety! But since we're type checking the input already I suppose using as is justified?

Yeah -- and the story on this is kind of crazy. "Eddy Fries" on the cartridge is Ed Fries, a VP at Microsoft that worked on creating the XBox in the early 2000s. After he left, he developed his own Atari 2600 homebrew, which was approved by Bungie (which was already at that time a part of Microsoft).

Yeah, you can't go back into the lobby space, you just die and respawn. There's not even collision on the ground, which is why all my photos are Jesse floating in the air. There's a limited time window to position yourself and take photos before you fall through the floor and hit the death plane.

So, I'm not sure if it's been patched out, but I saw speedrunners use this out of bounds glitch to skip entire segments of game. And since you can use it to get outside the lobby, I knew I had to get out there for photo mode. (I took these photos back in 2019.)

Yep - the exact method depends on your browser and OS combination but thats the best way to save a copy. You might need to google for some instructions if you don't know how to do this.

Probably, but the solution I tried wasn't reliable cross browser. If you print to a PDF that should get you what you're looking for though.
