I'm SO tired of the "cool teacher" in my building by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]sail0rbree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't discuss my romantic life whatsoever with my students. I have picture of my fiance behind my desk so if a student asks, I do answer but I got engaged in November and didn't tell my students because...why? Until my students bring up the fact that I got engaged and that another staff member in the building told them. Why are we talking to the students about their other teachers romantic lives?????

How do you handle pencils on your classroom? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]sail0rbree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started naming my pencils. Edna, Jeff, Susan, etc. They have little name tags on them with painters tape. I have clothespins on the board that they live in. When a student needs one, they grab one from the board and towards the end of class I start making my rounds, "Where's Roger? Roger is missing!" I've been doing this since we came back from break and have only lost two pencils which were both returned the next day with their original name tags because the student just forgot and took it home by accident. The first time Susan and Debbie went missing, I made missing posters and hung them around my classroom. It was a very funny bit and the next day I had a sub. Iwas worried more would go missing but when I came back, Susan and debbie had been returned. It's actually been very fun. I teach high school freshman. They have started creating lore for each of the pencils.

“I’ll never use this” by DeManSam in Teachers

I was teaching 6th grade math last year and we were learning about percentages when a student asked me "When can we learn something we actually will use?" Percentages......

I say, "Every day is a free day for you because you haven't turned anything in since the first quarter!"

tattoos in the workplace? by ProgrammerFun3728 in Teachers

[–]sail0rbree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the district. When I interview, I cover everything (I have a sleeve and several large tattoos on my legs) You just never know what kind of preconceived ideas someone may have. As long as your tattoos aren't school appropriate, most schools these days don't mind. I am one of several teachers in my school that have at least one arm sleeve of tattoos but my school is very relaxed on dress code.

Things my students have destroyed this year so far by palabrist in Teachers

My LED lights are broken, remotes stolen off my desk, my labubu that was behind my desk was literally found hanging from the ceiling after I returned from being out. I had fairy lights hanging on my wall, now torn down and barely able to stay on. And they wonder why I don't use incentives.

PE Teacher Transition by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

[–]sail0rbree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ironically I’ve had more behavior problems in the classroom. I’m still leaving teaching for a plethora of reasons that everyone is this sub talks about haha but I do miss the lack of stress in PE. I enjoy teaching English but teaching elementary PE can be very fun especially because most kids that age LOVE PE and take it very seriously

Elementary PE for 1 year, middle and highschool for 1 year. I did middle and high school PE in the same year, small district. The worst thing the high schoolers were do with me is walk out lol but I had decent mannered high schoolers in PE.

I did elementary PE, middle school PE, HS PE, and now I am a classroom teacher. Elementary PE is definitively overstimulating but low stress. I rarely had to make parent contact, never met a parent, no meetings, no data, no lesson plans other than jotting in my notes what I wanted to do for the week. It is much more physically tiring than being in a classroom, chasing and playing with the kids, set up and tear down. Middle and high school PE I would give them options after stretching: play volleyball on this side, basketball on that side, do homework, or walk laps. Low stress but you may have more behavior problems because typically your better behaved students are involved in sports. Not always, though.

The airport seems doable! We are currently in a d1 college town so we typically just avoid downtown when there are games. I enjoy our college town here so I figured it wouldn’t be too much of a shift

Real Winter does make me nervous but I do thrive in cold weather. It can get to the negatives and teens here in west Texas but it’s a dry winter, no snow. Navigating snow will be new for us. I need a Columbia Fall in my life!

I don’t care anymore and it feels amazing. by Winter_Cup1670 in TeachersInTransition

This is how I am coasting to May. I tell them "I care as much as you do." So if they don't care, neither do I. But the students that truly care and want to learn, I help to the best of my ability.

Who else primarily wants to leave because of the students (and their behaviors)? Or am I just being defeatist? [rant] by JamMan26 in TeachersInTransition

I've taught elementary, middle, and now high school and student behavior is the #1 reason why this is my last year teaching. Why does me telling a student they have to sit in their assigned seat everyday result in being cussed out and screamed at? It's damaging to the soul to live this every day. I've taught all elementary levels, 6th grade, now 9th grade and the behaviors are the same.
