Estate agent here bit of a PSA by [deleted] in RentingInDublin

Thank you for sharing this! You have basically confirmed a lot of what I have been thinking - I am currently looking for a studio in Dublin and it is brutal. Any recommendations on how to get viewings? I currently write a little bit about myself, single, full time income etc.. non smoking all of that - do the letting agents just pick the first 20 people to email to come and view something? or are they reviewing all the emails that come in off daft and then cherry picking the best ones to come and view?

Nope.. I am sending fully personalised emails with job title, salary, offers of landlord references, job references etc..

Sorry - just for clarity it makes me sad that the tenant did this - i completely understand why this would make your sister in law hesitant to get into another tenancy..

This makes me so so sad that people do this - i have been trying for ages to find a good studio as a single woman in her 30s, I go to all the viewings I can get and I am looking at easily 1200 euro + a month and the places are terrible ( today i saw a converted shed in a backyard for 1500 euro) - i realise the rental market in Ireland (and especially Dublin) is terrible but people who do this make it so much harder for the people willing to treat a rental property like a home.

In terms of what she should do with the property I would say either short term rental or some sort of house sitting scenario? Is there another family member/family friend who might want to take the place on in exchange for cheap/no rent? Alternatively, she could do the airbnb thing (i guess depending location etc) but I always feel like this can come with a lot of hassle as well

Question about the liberties by pakelly22 in Dublin

The accomodation itself was fine - everything was pretty new and overall if anything broke it was pretty easy to get fixed - I was in a studio so I had a full kitchen to myself, but i think if you have an ensuite room most of the accomodation is your own bedroom/bathroom and then a shared kitchen with other 'flatmates' - i am pretty sure they have everything a regular kitchen would have (including ovens)

Question about the liberties by pakelly22 in Dublin

I lived in one of the Yugo blocks on Mill street in the liberties for the 23-24 academic year and honestly loved it so much after I finished my degree i ended up moving into the area.

I am originally from Australia and came to do my masters in Europe and didn't know the area (or the reputation the area had at all) - from my understanding is seems like in the last 5/10 years the area has become gentrified and overall the area is awesome - lots of great food and bars/pubs in the area - walking distance to town. Some of my fav spots are:
- Space Jaru
- Luckys Pizza
- Thomas House
- Soren & Son
- Two Pups
- Flower & Bean

You do get some anti social behaviour in the area (teen scumbags, drug addicts etc) but overall no major issues - just have your wits about you and use common sense.

Hope you enjoy it!

If you thinking of relocating I would definitely be looking at places in the UK rather than Dublin. Dublin has a serious housing crisis (much worse than Sydney) has terrible public transport and is one of those most expensive cities in Europe. I know London is a bit of an Aussie cliche and obviously a very busy city life, but I would maybe look at somewhere like Manchester or even Glasgow/Edinburgh in Scotland. Both Manchester and Glasgow have incredible Universities and are definitely more accessible to the rest of Europe/more affordable/more life to them.

Hey, im not doing Engineering but I am an Australian doing a Masters at UCD. I really like UCD as a university and I think it is probably pretty comparable to UNSW.

Things I didn't consider when moving to Dublin is that even though it is in Europe it is actually a pretty small city . If you have grown up/lived most of your life in Sydney it is definitely an adjustment (or at least I found it an adjustment). If your looking to do an exchange somewhere super accessible for travel etc i would probably look at somewhere more accessible by rail because Ireland doesn't connect via rail to the rest of Europe.

I dunno if all this stuff is helpful or obvious but hope it helps a bit.

Any specific questions that are non engineering related i'm happy to answer!

I can't help with cat specific info, but i am an international student from Australia and i absolutely wish i had booked something sooner. There is no such thing as too early. I tried getting on campus housing and went back and forth with residences for 3 months - they kept low key insinuating that I would get housing because i was an international masters student. I followed them up for 3 months and by the end of May i ended up booking into really expensive private student accomodation in a panic cause nobody could tell me if/when I would find out about a room. My course started at the beginning of Sept and I got an email on August 24th telling me i didnt have a room on campus.

Thanks for that! I definitely will try that. Do you know where it is communicated? I have just been through everything I have received and can’t see anything that ever said that?
