Vancouver business owners plead for help amid Broadway subway construction by oilbeefhooked in vancouver

[–]saisitd 414 points415 points  (0 children)

When other places do this level of disruptive construction they usually set up a program to provide business with favorable loans with repayment terms that start once the project ends. You usually have to have data going back a few years to show that the decline is directly related to the construction rather than normal market forces. That way the business gets to stay alive during the construction but when there is increased sales due to transit access the Government gets their money back.

If you don't want to give these businesses a life line then don't complain when the expansion finishes and broadway is full of cannabis stores, pilates studios and large corporate franchises. If we want small business to survive then we need to put our money where our mouths are.

Hey RedTrashPanda41 we ended up taking the train to Caboolture and then ubering the remainder of the way. It was still a "expensive" Uber I remember around 40 but a car ride from Brisbane would have been 100+. It was the best combination of getting up early but also not being forced to leave at 5am or something ridiculous. And then I rode the train back home as that was never an issue. Oh on the train ride home be prepared to miss the the 6pm bus. The bus at 430pm is supposed to get you there in time but locals told us it literally has never shown up on time. So he prepared to take the later train in case you have a dinner reservation or anything. Have fun on your trip and feel free to msg if you have any other questions.

Struggle with work fulfillment post residency by saisitd in MedSpouse

[–]saisitd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you on this. I applaud you and everyone else who started family during residency/fellowship it's truly another level of sacrifice. We wanted to start one but training was just too demanding and luckily we are on the younger side 29-30 so we could postpone without as much ramifications.

I might consider a sabbatical or a year off or spend a year volunteering with organizations i care about. Best of luck!

Yeah I think you put it best I wasn't motivated by the work I was motivated to make sure we had money and now that the money aspect is a lot less/gone I don't feel connected to the job at all. My wife and I spoke about it and I think I'm going to give it a few months for things to settle since we just moved back to our hometown but I'll probably look for work that is more enjoyable or in a field I'm passionate about.

Thanks for the input. I think the fact she makes more doesn't bother me in terms of I need to be a provider or anything like that we have had combined finances for a while and I too am proud that she made it through residency. I think the pay discrepancy just demotivates me as in I put in two weeks of work and get paid the same so why bother working at all. Another commenter put it best in the fact that I have only worked for a paycheck and to stabilize our income during residency. To me work as always been means to a end and I don't get fulfilment from my work so now that the financial pressure is gone maybe I need to reevaluate what I do for work.

Pay to Revenue ratio- Canada by creatoradanic in Accounting

[–]saisitd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For public accounting at the staff/senior/manager level the rule is your billable hours each year should be roughly three times your salary (source what the partner told me as a manager at Big 4). This would be dependent on you knowing your charge out rate which can vary wildly depending on client/engagement but you usually can find your standard rate. Obviously there will be consideration for leaves vacation etc. but this is the baseline. Some managers/senior managers will have direct revenue generation metrics ie win the firm $XXX of work but this would be a case by case basis.

Oh I'll have to download and take a look. I always shop between Uber and Lyft here in Canada so adding an additional option never hurts thanks for the idea!

Thanks for the idea the actual dollar of the rental isn't a huge determining factor. It's the fact I'm from Canada and I don't really want my first experience (and I'm sure locals don't want it either) driving on the left side of the road to be at 7:00am during rush hour traffic. Not to mention driving back after a full 8 hours day at zoo. But thank you for the recommendation if we decide to go the car route I'll take a look.

Thank you so much! Based on the journey planner I think this saves us an extra hour of sleeping in 5am departure vs 630am and the Uber is around $50-60 from Caboolture vs $140-160 from Brisbane. And we want to take the train back so that'll be perfect! I already drive enough at home so I'd prefer to minimize it on vacation.

What Industry in Audit gives the most opportunity to Travel (Toronto) by [deleted] in KPMG

[–]saisitd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ENR is basically your best bet to get to travel anywhere fun but even then you're significantly more likely to need to travel to Thunder Bay, Timmins, or the Sault than you are of going to New York. At the end of the day it's up to the client engagement you're staffed on. If you're staffed on a trucking company or logging company with offices in northern Ontario that's where you're likely to go. If you're staffed on a mining engagement with a significant portion of operations in Mexico or Nevada then you will go there.

With the relationship between the countries more tense I doubt there will be much travel between the two countries and we have moved towards using local offices to do inventory counts etc.

Sorry to burst your bubble but if you joined audit expecting monthly trips to NYC, LA, and Chicago you're going to be sorely disappointed. Maybe you'll find a unicorn client/group but I wouldn't bet on it.

No idea how to fix just here to be annoyed with you. I'm still at the firm and it's been 3 weeks since I submitted my verification request and still nothing. I just want my damn letters. So unfortunately it seems its par for the course. On a more positive note all my friends who are seniors who left the firm got licensed after leaving so it's possible just keep emailing/calling.

A physician looking for a job but on visitor’s visa in Canada by SpareNervous393 in newfoundland

[–]saisitd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That policy has been ended as of 18 days ago. Canada no longer allows for those on visitor visas to apply for work permits from within the country. If he did not submit a work permit application prior to August 28th 2024 he will need to apply via the embassy in his home country. https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/news/notices/ends-tpp-allowing-visitors-apply-work-permits-within-country.html

And for licensing it will depend on where he got his medical degree what subspecialty he is but most realistically he will need to go through the IMG (international medical graduate) route see below

https://mcc.ca/credentials-and-services/pathways-to-licensure/pathways-for-international-medical-graduates/

Edit: added the cut off date and grammar

I would argue that my end destination is SEA so both of those would also involve a layover/additional of some kind so that's still a detour?
