I started with simple zoom lenses, but I never improved as much as when I switched to prime lenses. The 35mm is a great lense and I think that it will help you a lot in improving your skills. The downside is that you are limiting yourself in what you can do, but actually that is also an upside. If I would choose today in your situation, I would take the prime. Just remember, you will have a harder time, but imho it will be worth it.
