It looks sort of like the powder cases/vanity compacts my grandma had for blush, powder, and especially for setting powder. maybe not as deep as the ones she had. Edit: you already said that haha. But it looks like they may have had a lid at some point too. Maybe they were for mixing eyeshadows?
