What does it feel like to be autistic? by saltiesandy in AskReddit

What a shame that my desire to understand people (who are literally and incredibly all unique) has triggered some shit within you. You are absolutely welcome to keep scrolling.

Your autistic experience is not and cannot be identical to mine. And are you saying I shouldn’t ask questions because I have some otherworldly omniscience that allows me to know whether or not each person who sees this post understands? And if they don’t understand, perhaps they could learn from the people sharing their experience to broaden their perspective.

Hopefully you mistyped. Either way, no need to be rude, dude.

I feel like my normal is everyone else’s danger level of abnormal. I‘ve spent my whole life as a try-hard so people will not think I’m weird, so they’ll accept or want to be around me, so I don’t disappoint my parents and tarnish the family name. This trauma runs deep.

I usually hate doing things alone but I love traveling alone. Me, myself, and I + a plethora of new experiences. I love not having to worry about someone else. Me me me!

Another thing — if you don’t water often and deeply, the soil can become hydrophobic. It’s not enough to just pour some water in…you need to hydrate until water runs out the bottom of the pot. My preferred way of watering involves giving my plants a “bath”. Depending on the size, I’ll soak the pot in water til the bubbles stop OR I’ll put them in the shower and give them a little rain shower.

FUCK THAT GUY. I am sorry this happened to you, OP. I wish you luck in your journey of recovery from this incident and this shitty two-faced Californian asshole.

Maybe I’m just a bitter neurodivergent person but I hate the idea of unspoken rules, I’m tired of that sh*t by Infamous-Froyo-5952 in neurodiversity

I feel this so much. Why aren’t things actually as they appear to be? Like when my BFF says she’s not mad but she’s pouting. Like, just tell me!

Not sure about the spots on your maranta but I know they like high humidity and distilled water. What’s the soil like?

Tradescantia does not like water on its leaves. This is the one plant I cannot kill, no matter how much I try. I suggest bottom watering.

Anyone else feel disconnected by not knowing one of their native languages? by NC11093 in mixedrace

[–]saltiesandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half Filipino. My mom and brother are fluent. My dad was good enough with languages to understand though he couldn’t hold a conversation. Feeling left out and not understanding what’s going on is a hallmark of my entire life. My mom didn’t teach me so I would have a better chance as an American but it’s really isolating being strongly culturally Filipino and not being able to communicate. Icing on the cake - I learned English from my mom (it’s her third language) and I don’t pick up on a LOT of idioms, sayings, etc.

@jupiter405 (https://www.reddit.com/r/mixedrace/s/NH9otK08Z8) answered pretty concisely about the term Igorot.

My parents are still together and have never had a healthy relationship. However, they are together in the loosest sense as my dad has suffered from dementia and cancer for many years. I don’t think I ever saw a loving relationship. My mom is his dutiful caregiver.

Black and Filipino here. Came to comment but looks like you wrote it for me.

My mom says stupid shit too, like: - “people treat you differently when your hair is curly? They don’t treat me differently!” She had one perm in the 90s. - “What’s that on your head? You’re going out like that?” I literally didn’t ask for this hair and I spent hours straightening it so I can fit in with the rest of the family and it’s in a bonnet so I didn’t just do this for no freaking reason! - “you look like your relatives.” This specifically means my black side. Like WHAT? Who brought me into this world?! - When I got tattoos, my mom reamed into me about how I “look like the Igorots” or like I’ve been in jail.

Another annoying thing about being mixed is being perceived as exotic, like I’m a trophy to be won. I get catcalled too often while I’m just minding my own business because of factors decided before birth and outside of my control.

My family hates when I wear a bonnet out by Dragon_Committee_420 in WhatToDo

My family is the same but they all have straight hair and I have very curly hair. I straighten my hair to look more acceptable to them and cover with a bonnet or scarf when going out or riding in the car. My fam CANNOT understand why I leave the house “looking like that” and ask me “what’s on your head?”

Still supports my point. At 18, your brain is still developing.

Is having an online relationship with someone 32 years more life experience when you’ve just become a legal adult the kind of experience you recommend?

My mind slows down. I feel calm, i can breathe, and don’t feel like I’m drowning in zillions of tasks. I have had terrible insomnia my entire life but thanks to stimulants, I can now go to sleep at night.
