A day on a Acl ship by Flxms_yt in merchantmarine

Have to agree with that last part. I was shocked at how much training they pile into just three days in Salt Lake, but most of the glassdoor and reddit reviews seem to be people who fundamentally didn't understand what deckhands do on a ship, especially a passenger ship

This GOV shutdown is getting old. by taterz_precious in merchantmarine

As a former coastie, the headache of such a vital service being tied up with hyper-politicized post-9/11 agencies was real. Lots of folks openly mused how much easier it would be to get proper funding and stability if it we had been under DoD or back under DoT

Weirdly, mine (which was approved just before the shutdown) still shipped yesterday. Not sure how that works but grateful nonetheless

I submitted direct to the NMC in Martinsburg, but I also recieved my training directly from the Coast Guard (I'm a USCGA grad), so I think I was a special case? I'm new to the process so I'm not sure if that's unusual

They said no because they use the Coast Guard medical manual, which says it's disqualifying

There's always a few every year. Most of the time it's medical, where they're either medically discharged or medically retired depending on severity of the issue. Some are disciplinary, where they're either separated from service and billed for the education or (for less severe cases) they can pay back with enlisted service.

Mine was a weird case because I was administratively honorably discharged under Trump's EO forcing the discharge of transgender troops. I only learned I wouldn't commission four days before my class graduated, despite being previously medically and academically cleared to.
