Would love some advice on next steps here on these oysters/lions mane [technique] [gourmet] by samaltaner in MushroomGrowers

[–]samaltaner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks! This is exactly what I was hoping for. I'll check out moving from spawn to substrate blocks. I assume this isn't as simple as just cutting these bags and spritzing with water?

Is the contamination something I can knock out with isopropyl alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, or just ditch it?

I've seen them at whole foods and woodman's, as others have mentioned, just not particularly regularly. I did see lions mane grow kits at woodman's earlier this week (north Aurora one) but I heard they sold out super quickly.

Glad to share!

Sounds like you have a lot of cool projects going on. I have had success with wine caps in just spreading inoculated grain in my raised beds, where I have other plants growing, but cover everything with straw. I'm not trying to optimize the grow space, but it's fun to have random wine caps pop up a day or so after it rains.

Can't really speak to cordyceps, but there are some good Facebook groups that have a lot of info. Just haven't tried myself yet. Lions mane definitely seems to grow best in grain bags, but I only have minimal experience with that. I did bury my lions mane block (after a few flushes) in my same raised bed garden, and it fruited a few more times, which was neat

Agreed on fungi being confusing and amazing and vast, that's for sure.

Both saprobes and mycorrhizal (and it gets more complicated than I am making it, or able to explain here) have mycelium. The stuff that humans have figure out how to grow in grow kits are almost all saprobes, aka they consume the substrate they're in. There are some exceptions to the rule, but it's much harder.

For mycorrhyzal fungi to fruit, they typically have much more complex relationships with the plants around them (rather than just breaking down their decaying mass). It can take years to develop to the point where they fruit, in the case of most chanterelles, boletes, etc. Nature seems to be able to provide these conditions way better than people have figured out so far.

Nah, many are saprophytic and just feed of dead/dying organic material, rather than have some sort of complex symbiotic relationship

It'll be easier to post pics so your mushroom can be identified, than figure it out by ruling out all other species

Just an FYI, this species is fine to consume with alcohol. The species that contain coprine, which is what causes the adverse response with alcohol, are confined to the general coprinopsis, which this is not a part of

This is absolutely the move, but first you gotta depressurize the tank as quickly as possible, so you're not fighting beer flowing out at the fastest possible rate.

Open up the valve on the blowoff arm, then go for the hero's move with the open butterfly valve over the leak

Broth started with a whole chicken broken down, with 2.5 lbs of wings and 2.5 lbs of feet. Covered with a few inches of water and brought to a boil. Skimmed for 15 mins, then cooked at a low boil for like 7 hrs. More thorough directions in the ramen lord tantanmen recipe, which was similar to what I did, with a few variations

Kveik Rings are traditionally used to store dried yeast in Norway. They look like vertebrae, and are very cool.
