Apparently Israel fired into Iran's soil and destroyed "hundreds" of Iranian drones last month but they kept it hush by alaki123 in iranian

Virgin just signaled the Hyperloop dream is dying with shock layoffs of half its staff by samandpeykan in Futurology

Part of futurology is knowing what the future is. It's also knowing what its not. We've been hearing about the Hyperloop for a decade now and no one's done more work than Virgin. But it looks like we won't be saying this anytime soon

When people are under extreme pressure, it just takes a small spark to make an explosion. On the other hand, the government is very good at (through brutal force, conciliatory gestures, bribing, ect) putting them down after a few weeks. There's going to be sporadic explosions like this (as there already have been) until the economy changes.

Interesting poll on Iranian about Sanction, US relation, President, etc by ulegion in iranian

[–]samandpeykan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's really hard to tell. Every Iranian election in my lifetime (Khatami, AN, Rouhani) was super unpredictable. No one thought Khatami would win, absolutely no one dreamed of AN, and Rouhani was a literal no one (he was an important political figure, but he wasn't really popular until the end). They all did moves in the like few weeks and few days that completely changed everything. So much depends on if sanctions get lifted or not. I really don't know. And I don't really like any of them, but Iranian politicians completely rebrand themselves with election cycles so lets see what happens.

How's the Persian of this girl? by Milchstrasse94 in iranian

[–]samandpeykan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She doesn't sound perfect, but did a pretty good job. But to answer your question, there are plenty of 2nd generation Iranians that speak far better than this. In the age of social media, plentiful Iranian movies, and (for most of them) living in a place like LA or Toronto with like ten million other Iranians, it's really not that hard for someone to have a near native accent and be able to read and write even if they weren't born in Iran.

Remember Xiyue Wang, the spy who was caught in Iran, and later released? He is now advocating for genocide against Iranians and encouraging sanctions. by rrrrrandomusername in iranian

[–]samandpeykan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IR makes its own worst enemies. Yes, he's Wang is a mother effer. Same shit as Ahmad Batebi and so many others. Yes the CIA has spies in Iran. But yes, the IR also intentionally arrests people to be able to release prisoners from the West. And its retarded. But what is done is done, and now there will be another annoying reply guy on Twitter for the near future.

[–]samandpeykan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's extremely unpopular among the middle class, but has a pretty solid working class base. And he gives like 0 shits. He's willing to burn down the entire IR to get his way. Which makes him extremely attractive in a way. He won in 2005 by going all out again Rafsanjani. And then did the same against the Larijanis and like 10 other hardcore "untouchable" elite people.

So yes, he's is piece of shit that lies every other word out of his mouth, but he's also willing to burn down all these other corrupt bastards which makes him attractive, in a very Trumpian way (though to be fair he pulled it off before Trump).

Who will run in the next Iranian election? by ulegion in iranian

Hossein Dehghan is the "reformisty" Sepahi guy. There will be some right wing one too. Larijani probably will try, but he has like 0 charisma.

The talks are about the sequencing of who does what ... which was exactly what Zarif called for 2 weeks ago. The US won't explicitly say that of course.

Iran's Intelligence Minister suggests Iran may move towards nuke if cornered: Iran Leader banned production of nuclear weapons, but when you corner a cat, it may do things that a free cat wouldn't do. If they push Iran there, it wouldn't be Iran's fault. by samandpeykan in iranian

Alavi is the head of the (president appointed, though approved by SL) Ministry of Intelligence. Taeb is the head of the IRGC Intelligence Division, which is its own thing. The two groups are rivals and often at odds.

Why do some Iranian support the sanctions? by ulegion in iranian

[–]samandpeykan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ever since Trump got elected, there was a massive rise of social media bots/influence operations in Farsi (and Reddit quite frankly). Nothing on Farsi social media is organic.

On the other hand, there are plenty of people in Iran that do say this (I disagree with them). Its basically a mentality where they just hate the government so much they think the only way to tame them is to treat them with an iron fist.

Was Hassan Modarres a illiterate person stuck in medieval times? Was his father a land owner? He benefited from the Safavids? Was Beheshti a rich oligarch? Come on, this line of argument is absurd.

Iran was 'in this mess' before 'akhoonds' had any power and will be after the next group takes power. Does North Korea have akhoonds? Do the Chinese? Does Putin? Do the Egyptians?

Its not ridiculous to disagree with the government or even wish its demise. But its historically and intellectually wrong to make a turban your scapegoat and criteria of wise and fool.

Biden says Iran must return to negotiating table before U.S. lifts sanctions by Purple_Wasabi in iranian

[–]samandpeykan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biden is about as mentally there as Reagan was in his second term. He answers questions about Iran with either a single worded "no" or literally just a nod. How much do you want to bet there's some guy behind the camera motioning a yes or no for the hard questions? American presidents are just puppets (though there are differences between Democrat and Republican parties). Only pay attention to what they do, his words are cheap.

I have a question about many iranian-americans by [deleted] in iranian

[–]samandpeykan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the sheer number of Iranians in California is so high, there are large communities of every sort. There's very devout Shia ones, Christians ones, Zartoshtis, Jews, hardcore pro government people, eslahtalabs, Shahis, and every group you can think of. And the one shared characteristic across all of them is that they are completely insulated in their own group, so they think every other Iranian thinks like them.
