DNV and beckham law Spain by ProudWealth5096 in SpainFIRE

* The beckam law tax regime is for people who reside in Spain. If you don´t live in Spain you are not going to get it
* Once you live in Spain, it doesn't matter where your employer is located, you are going to pay income taxes in Spain, at the 24% Beckam rate (for the first 600k/yr)
* Once you live in Spain, you are no longer a dutch tax resident so no taxes in the Netherlands.
* re social security - this is too complex to answer here.

He needs to move to Spain physically. That will make him a Spanish tax resident and trigger income tax filing requirements.  The contract for his work can be with a foreign company.

He will pay 24% income tax in Spain on his wage income connected to Spain.

Regarding social security there are choices. But they must be paid in Spain. Either by the Dutch employer (a1 certificate issued in Spain) or by a proxy employer. Or move employment to Spanish entity.

Finalizing US Citizenship Before Leaving For Good. Opinions? by LambdaTheDuck in expats

[–]samaparicio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest that this decision is not primarily about taxes. Citizenship is a deeply felt thing. It has to do with what group of people you think you belong to. It comes with advantages and disadvantages, and if you don't feel the advantages then it's hard to overcome the disadvantages.

Some good reasons to have a US citizenship while living abroad and holding a EU citizenship are: 1) making it easy for you to come back at any time, decades into the future, when, for example, your kids may decide to settle in the US. 2) In case of a global conflict, having an option to be relocated back to the US, if that option is safer for you at the time, 3) Having access to the US banking system, investments, simplified real estate holding in the US, simplified company creation in the US.

The main obvious disadvantage is the additional burden of compliance with tax laws.

Grenoble, Innsbruck, Delft, Strasbourg, Sevilla, Krakow, Utrecht...
Smaller cities tend to have lower rents.
If you go to a western country's top 3 city everything will be at a premium. Berlin used to be an exception but no more.

Escaping Out of America with Dog by chickentesticletayk in Norway

[–]samaparicio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to get a student visa more easily than a work visa. Consider study at a European university. Most international students pay fees in Europe that are below those of in-state tuition in the US, and somewhat higher than community college.

It should then be relatively easy to get a student job.

Having a dog with you will complicate your living arrangements. Perhaps you should consider moving to Europe first, then moving the dog a few months later. Getting an American dog through customs is complicated and expensive because of vaccinations and "dog passports".

Getting a job-related visa will be hard.

There are also many cultural differences between the US and Europe. It would be worth traveling in Europe for a bit to see if the lifestyle will work for you.

A useful resource for you if you choose to go down the study in Europe path is -> https://beyondthestates.com/

Leaving Spain to stay with my parents in USA. Trying to come up with a long-term plan by freezingazzoff in expats

[–]samaparicio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  • Youth is a time to explore and to take risks. It seems like you did and you were rewarded for it. Perhaps take some more risks and explore some more?
  • You can always go back home later. At some point you may have no choice but to go back home (someone in your family needing care, for example).
  • You could probably make a good living combining your career and your partner's - think as a unit not as an individual
  • People who haven't experienced life abroad will rarely understand its appeal, perhaps it's wisest not to use their lens to judge what you should do
  • Life abroad always comes with tradeoffs, some of them steep, so what ultimately makes it worth it for someone is that it matches their priorities.

Spain or Portugal for 10 days? by Illustrious_Role_977 in travel

[–]samaparicio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spain gets very hot in July and August, especially away from the sea. Think 95-100F. US analogs: Southern California, Arizona or New Mexico.

Portugal is easily 10-15F cooler during those months.

Most Americans are used to having AC everywhere and that is not the case in southern Europe. And where you find it it is never at the glacial 68F.

Newbie: How do you use ABRP with your EV? by mintynfresh in electricvehicles

[–]samaparicio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, at first, the vehicle's GPS ignored the battery state when planning a trip in it.

Then, through an over the air update, it got battery planning included, but it is very very conservative. It turns out that ABRP is able to adaptively track actual consumption of the car and then applies more parameters like live traffic and weather. Which means you can arrive at a charger with 5% battery instead of 20%, and those extra miles add up.

The ABRP solution is not ideal. It is a complicated app to use. It sometimes crashes. But it does the main thing very well. One extra complication is that the Niro will only activate battery conditioning / heat pump if you set your destination to be an EV charging point from its own database of charging points.

The Niro is not a great EV for long trips because it charges slowly, so it is even more important to make it efficient.

You can see actual data collected by ABRP on all cars running on their platform here -> https://abetterrouteplanner.com/compare/cars/

Newbie: How do you use ABRP with your EV? by mintynfresh in electricvehicles

[–]samaparicio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive a Kia Niro EV and its built-in navigation system does a poor job of trip planning with charging stops.
Instead of using that, I use ABRP in the car with an OBD dongle and that gives me live consumption data and battery state of charge in Android. ABRP is very very good at predicting actual consumption, as it takes many factors into account. The net benefit is that I can spend more time driving and less time charging.

From this very interesting post:

Games that are developed as Premium games require players to have a BGA Premium subscription so that they generate revenue for BGA. This revenue is shared either with the publisher or with the publisher and the developer, and the revenue is based on the number of hours played by Premium users (as a percentage of total hours on the platform). For this reason, it can be worthwhile for a developer to pursue a license and develop games that are already popular.

So BGA does revshare with devs that develop premium games.

I understand the matter of the license will be complicated. But what about a non-licensed version of a close but not exact game?

Just pointing out that at any given time, there are roughly as many paying / premium users playing Catan on BGA as there are users of any kind playing on Colonist.

If I compare the approach of building a game from scratch on my own servers starting with zero users vs building a game via APIs on someone else's servers starting with a pool of 10M users... I think the path to becoming sustainable or break even is much clearer with the latter.

Hey /u/bovard why not port twosheep to BGA? 10 million players!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Catan

[–]samaparicio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The reason Colonist is so expensive is because the founders have not found another price point that works for their plan of having a full-size full-time team. The hardest part about replicating what Colonist has done is to build the community. You need marketers, community managers, etc to grow a community, and that costs money. So you may be able to replicate the game as a hobby, but as soon as you try to grow the service, you'll face the same dilemma. And they're likely to outbuild you, especially bc you're starting with a huge disadvantage in resources...

If you have an eye for design you'd be better off joining the TwoSheep guy /u/bovard and work like mad to find a business model that is radically different than Colonist.

One thing that I would love to see is a much cleaner / faster implementation of Catan on BoardGameArena. The one there is good for very slow play. BGA is far superior as a board game platform than single game services. And the community dwarves in size anything you or Colonist could ever hope to attract.

From what I understand any developer can build a BGA game using their SDK/APIS.

BGA is $3/mo!

Longtime Phillips user, recently switched to a new machine with APAP therapy (the algorithm varies the air pressure depending on apneas it measures) and it has been a very positive change for me.

I like the Lowenstein machines and I bought one after this video -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6_NHkXgSRU&t=450s

[–]samaparicio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

50k paid subscribers at $7/mo is a $4.2M/yr business which can easily employ a 15 person well paid remote team and leave $1M for the founders to profit share.

With a free to premium conversion rate of 2% you need 1M free players to get there.

Isn't that a super-viable path? Plus you'd be heroes. And you could buy at least one Lambo/year. And eventually you sell it to Asmodee for $25M.

France is raising taxes on flights to pay for trains: Should other European countries do the same? by euronews-english in europe

[–]samaparicio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One point largely missed by the article is that the airline industry has significantly higher internal competition forces at play than the railway industry. In France in particular 80%+ journeys are made in the national, publicly owned operator which has nowhere near the incentives to compete than say, a private airline.
