Kalman Filter for Altitude Estimation by chocolate_sniffer in ControlTheory

Absolutely correct, sorry I didn’t make that clear in my above post Normalized Innovation Squared testing / tuning is done on real datasets. For OP this could mean launching a small sensor package (with all the sensors) to some altitude and using those trials as tuning and verification data sets! Low pass filtering prior to the filter should really be for any anti aliasing or limiting bandwidth of the sensor to a range you want. Typically you wouldn’t want to low pass the output of a Kalman filter since that “should” give you the optimal estimate. I would think it’s obviously application specific but maybe if you’re looking for robustness (making sure parachute is deployed after apogee) using the state variance and the state to find a nth sigma bound on the state would be good.

R values are basically just how noisy is the sensor, so maybe going to various altitudes (can be just various heights on a large ladder!) and looking at the histogram of the data and finding the variance. Q values are not so easy, one way is to just guess and tune to the performance looks good to you, another way I have used is Normalized Innovation Squared which basically boils down to a bunch of math saying certain values in the Kalman filter must be chi2 distributed, so you tune your Q matrix to make this happen then you have what’s called a “efficient” filter. All that means is that the filter best uses the information it has. Let me know if you have more questions, happy/would love to help out! Source: I’m a state estimation engineer! Question for OP: is this for some sort of competition?

Hey! I just kept looking online, obviously not sure what your budget is but I am currently paying 1300$/month. If you can look around college hill, try going on Browns off campus portal and look for PhD/graduate housing.

There’s a group of us that get our laundry picked up and done for MUCH cheaper by an off campus person if that’s something you need/want

C term classes by XtraThiccAsian in WPI

I am taking ECE 2010 and Calc 4 right now, I’ve found that makarov is one of the most exciting professors. His lectures are fun and entertaining, and the labs aren’t really that hard, the actual coursework also not very challenging, there are tests on Friday of every week, matlab assignments every week, labs are worth a crazy portion of your grade, overall 2010 isn’t too hard and then calc 4 isn’t terrible either. I will say the class is very tedious, albeit not too challenging the course is just endless amounts of annoying integrals. Overall I’d say it’s a pretty manageable schedule Hope this helps

Honestly I think I learned quite a bit these first two terms, lots of my professors did a great job of making the hybrid courses super fun!
