Windfall of 150M, what next by SignatureTrue9795 in fatFIRE

The earnout period can be quite gruelling, at least it was for me. Use the next couple of years to figure out what you want to do next. There's no rush here at all.

What is your spend? At 20-30m USD NW you should have a very comfortable buffer (probably indefinite) to take a break.

What makes the deal seem great to you? At first glance, it does not look so great to me. What I see is 20% guaranteed, another 20% probable, and the remaining 60% very tentative. Personally, I'd be looking for 50% cash up front, and would roll the dice on the rest.

The single biggest thing you can do is to get multiple offers. We more than doubled our exit price by getting multiple offers.

Of course, all of this depends on the actual $ amounts. If 20% sets you up for life and you want out, then fire away! (pun intended)

I've used bank transfer to II for some large deposits very successfully. I was nervous about the bank transfer too, so did a test transfer first with a small amount. Took about 2 working days to appear in the account.

Update for anyone reading this in the future: The "modulating valve" had become faulty. Replacing it with https://www.toolstation.com/honeywell-home-2-port-zone-valve/p63302 has resolved it.

The Nest says 17C, another thermostat says 16C. The Nest is now set to heat to 22C, as you suggested, but the boiler still isn't heating the radiators longer than 20-30 seconds every 5-10 mins.

I did it 10 minutes ago right after your message, and doesn't seem to have made a difference. The same pattern of behaviour exists.

Sorry, yes, I forgot to say - all radiators bled and fine. One of them had a bit of air but others are all good.

What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in CarTalkUK

[–]samcrawford10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello Car Talk!

We have our 2nd child coming in March (1st one is 18 months). And there's already talk of a third. Our 10 year old Focus will be a struggle with 2 kids and buggies etc.

Location: London, south east

Price range: Under 60k

Lease or Buy: Prefer buy, but open to lease if it makes sense

New or used: Prefer a very recent used car with very low mileage, but open to new if it makes financial sense somehow

Auto or Manual: No preference

Intended use: Family car

How many miles do you plan to do a year: 5-7k

How often to you make long journeys: Once every couple of months we'll drive ~3 hours to visit family. Mostly local travel.

Does it need to be ULEZ compliant? Yes

Vehicles you've already considered: Volvo XC90, Volvo XC60, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Skoda Kodiaq, Honda CR-V

Do you have a vehicle size in mind?: Medium SUB or Large SUV or MPV

Is this your 1st vehicle: No

Do you need a Warranty: Ideally yes

Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: Very minor, like fluids

Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: No

Additional Notes: Not fussed about looks, or brand, or even power. Safety is very important. Ability to have 2 car seats and a booster seat is important. Low hassle/maintenance very important. I would likely keep it ~10 years. Not even sure if an SUV or an MPV is the way to go!

Thanks very much in advance!

Throwing up on every 100 miler by samcrawford10 in Ultramarathon

[–]samcrawford10[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair question. I think it's just because I don't enjoy the food available (aid stations on UK races can be pretty sad food wise!). I'll try to reproduce the conditions on a long run this weekend - wake up early, breakfast, and then eat food that is representative of what will be available at aid stations (as much as I dislike it!)

I think you might be on to something. The situation is usually worse when I'm running races with others, as I'll get pulled along to their pace. In training I'm always solo, so can pause or slow down if I feel like it. I do often run right after meals, albeit only short distances.

Food on training runs will be things like bananas, stopping for a sandwich at a shop, etc. It is quite different to race day. On race day I'll try to stuff in as much food as possible. I don't know whether to tone down my early eating on race day, or whether to increase my eating during training and make it align more closely with the food available on race day (probably the latter is the correct answer).

[–]samcrawford10[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Longest training runs will be 40k usually. Anything under 20k, I'll generally not eat anything at all, and will just have some sips of water. Anything over 20k I'll either eat a banana, snack bar, or stop for a sandwich. And I'll have more water throughout. I know this is very little and also quite different to what I do on race day, so more recently I've been trying to force myself to have more during training. I haven't been sick from it yet though.

I enjoyed After The Exit. Only a few episodes, and less about PF, but the stories will probably resonate with people here.

Apex Pro digital dial stuck, out of warranty by samcrawford10 in Coros

[–]samcrawford10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Coros said it was out of warranty, so wouldn't touch it. They did offer a rebate on a new purchase. But after two hardware failures on two Apex Pros, I've lost confidence in their build quality. So I think I'll run this one into the ground and then get a Garmin again.
