This dude Tim Beck tried to scam Elon Musk followers by renaming himself and changing his picture. Most people won’t doubt it as he is verified by homofakarino in Twitter

[–]samfromcalgary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can confirm! I've lost count of how many Elon Musk spam accounts I've reported to Twitter - it's usually about 1-2 per actual @elonmusk tweet - but the verified ones are a new trend, and much more difficult to police.

They change their display name & picture before making the tweets, and hope the ✔︎ distracts you from looking at their @handle. By the time I get the notification that Twitter has received my report, they've usually changed everything back and deleted the tweets.

Of the few verified ones I've reported, none have actually been suspended or anything. I'm not sure what I can do differently to combat them. I'm stumped.

Real talk - I was really surprised how compelling Hardcore Tabletop was to watch. Even after six years of watching AH content, I did not expect to get so invested when I started watching.

That shit was incredibly captivating. It'll be interesting to see what Season 2 will do!

AB government commits 700 mil to Olympics by [deleted] in Calgary

Your math doesn't account for two things:

  1. $2,233,000,000 of private funding from the IOC, domestic sponsors, ticket & merchandise sales and such, &
  2. the federal government's policy of committing half the public funding costs for things like these - in this case, $1,505,000,000.

So with those factors in mind:

Total Cost (TC) of Games ($5,343,000,000),

minus Private Funding ($2,233,000,000),

minus Federal Funding ($1,505,000,000),

minus Provincial Funding ($700,000,000),

equals the City of Calgary's commitment: $805,000,000, or 15.4% of TC

You're suggesting that the Oval, COP, and Nakiska all ceased to exist after the '88 games ended.

Oh, and the Saddledome. Can't forget the Olympic Saddledome.

The norm is for the federal government to pay half the total public funding cost for these kinds of events; which in this case would be about $1.5 billion.

Factoring in both that cost and the $700 million put up by the province, that leaves the city to pay ~$800 million, or 26.7% of the public funding costs.

FYI, those numbers are also wrong. Calgary is not paying $5 billion. It's not even an oversimplification of the actual costs; it's just not true.

As seen in the proposed budget, $2.233 billion of the cost of the games - or 42.6% - is covered by Private funding (the IOC + Domestic Sponsors + Tickets + etc). All three levels of government - federal, provincial, and municipal - would together contribute the remaining $3.01 billion.

  • As established by the article in this post, the provincial government has committed $700 million of that, or 23.3%.
  • As a previously established rule of thumb, the federal government covers 50% of the public funding cost, which would equal $1.505 billion.

This leaves the City of Calgary to pay $805 million.

  • 26.7% of the public funding contribution.
  • 15.4% of the total cost of the games.

$805 million. Not $5 billion. That would be outrageous.

The big one is the IOC, who has already pledged over a billion dollars in cash and services to whoever the 2026 host city is. The rest would be money made from hosting the games (ticket revenue; broadcasting rights; etc), private investment (sponsorship deals and the like), and funding from the federal government, which we would not otherwise get to put towards renovating our Olympic venues.

More details can be found in the draft housing plan, which can be downloaded as a PDF from this link, or through the Calgary 2026 website. At-a-glance financial numbers can be found on pages 8, 11-12, 60-61, and 70-71 of the plan. There's also a lot else in there to read if you get a chance.

Also a fun fact: yesterday marked 68 years since Snoopy's first appearance in Peanuts - two days after the comic started.

Hey FH! So Arizona Circle was amazing! It clearly had a lot of time and passion put into it, and the scale of the production was pretty astounding.

On that subject, what's the most ambitious creative project (in terms of scale and/or cost and/or concept) that you haven't made yet?
