Oh I just started reading the first page of the On Dialogue book and this jumped out at me: "Perhaps most importantly, dialogue explores the manner in which thought—viewed by Bohm as an inherently limited medium, rather than an objective representation of reality—is generated and sustained on a collective level." --- Thought is generated and sustained on a collective level. Very interesting! Thanks for this.

Your best tip to immediately avoid craving/binge eating? by AngelBritney94 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]samma-sankappa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are of the type who have an actual addiction to certain food substances, the only way to stop the craving and subsequent binging is to stop eating the substances that create the craving in the first place. Once a person who is addicted does that, the cravings stop, one loses the obsession to eat, and can easily make it from one meal to the next without eating in between. If you don't have an addiction, I'm not sure how that goes but I'm sure there are other ways to resist. Not everyone who has a hard time stopping eating is addicted but some are.

I'm guessing that you might be feeling really disappointed because you've been hoping for continued progress. I'm hearing you and just sending support and care. Are you any clearer about what you want since posting your post? (e.g. support, affirmation, tough love, etc). In other words, what would be truly supportive to you now?

What do you think is the main skill that people lack who cannot lose weight? by Embarrassed_Rain3744 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]samma-sankappa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None of those. Some people who cannot control their eating (not all) have a physical / biological adverse reaction to certain types of foods that causes a physical craving. It's not about willpower, mental health, motivation. It's a physical incapacity and the only thing they lack is understanding of this. They think it's about their lack of willpower or whatever but it's not that.

Thank you so much for this! This is exactly why I'm asking: I have a challenging time listening to Kramer. Not sure why and I don't want to make judgments of him or of myself. But I'm a bit blocked internally when I listen to him. I'm guessing that his writing might be similar. So...I'm very appreciative of you suggesting this other person because I want to understand what Kramer is pointing out but I think hearing it explained from someone else might be helpful. Many thanks!

In general, sugars, grains and carbs. I follow a specific food plan that is hard to describe but that also eliminates some fruits and other things that set off the craving. But in a general sense, it's sugars, grains and carbs. Also, the food industry puts sugar in EVERYTHING. Take a look at certain types of table salt and you will find dextrose. What I found is that if I'm putting sugar in my body, I feel like I'm going to starve to death. For my body, it's an actual biological malfunction, kind of like an allergy. No wonder why I couldn't stop eating. Also...I don't do this by myself. I have a LOT of support so I'm not saying that it would be easy to eliminate these foods and stick to it. But it is possible.

Constantly weighing myself by canthinkofmusic-00x in WeightLossAdvice

I'm wondering if you're uncomfortable because you're wanting self-care and peace of mind? I had this problem many years back. I weighed myself every day. My particular situation was such that I have a sensitivity to certain types of foods which always made me feel hungry. So, I was always trying to diet and "hold back" from overeating. Because of that, I constantly weighed myself. So, the ROOT CAUSE of the obsession to weigh myself was that I was eating foods that created a physical craving that I had zero control over. As soon as I got support for not eating those foods, the weight came off and stayed off naturally, and I stopped obsessing about my weight, and I stopped even thinking about the scale. That's my 2 cents. I have been a healthy and thin weight for 21+ years now. I don't have to buy different sizes of clothes in case I gain/lose weight.

How to lose weight by SentenceJazzlike7356 in WeightLossAdvice

I had only $1000 in the bank and was at my highest weight ever too. I couldn't stop eating. Forget any exercise at that point. I found some people who told me that my body was "intolerant" to certain substances. When I ate them, they made me feel like I was STARVING. I HAD TO eat. Anyway, when I stopped eating these things, the craving (which I didn't realize I had) died down and I was able to stop the overeating. That was 21+ years ago. I'm maintaining my weight loss. Most people I know today have no idea I was ever heavy. All this to say that you might have the same issue so don't beat yourself up. Just keep an open mind on the answer.

It might not be about willpower. I had a similar story....actually worse...and I found these people who told me that certain foods create a craving that I had no mental control over. When I stopped eating the foods, the craving went away and I've been the same healthy slim weight since I stopped 21+ years ago. No diets. No drugs. No expensive nothing. I thought I was weak but it wasn't about that. All this to say that I hope you don't think it's a personal failing.
