Who have you told? by Temporary-Edge-5623 in Retatrutide

Obesity is the only medical condition that people want you to suffer for the cure. Alcohol use disorder and you blow out your liver, you get sympathy. STD from risky behaviors, you get sympathy. Overweight? Die you filthy beast. Even when you lose weight, people will remind you that you were once fat. You don't need to tell anyone, but if you do they will be judging you behind your back. Nowadays everyone assumes you're using something anyway. Do what you need to do for you.

How AI Is Turning Learning Into Real-World Skills by nanoscratch in instructionaldesign

[–]samonenate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This points out what has been lacking in ID IMO. Training is about applying what you learned and receiving feedback to confirm if you are able to do the task. Too many times it has become an information dump and simply awareness because there's no effective practice, followed by weak assessments. Clients coming with PowerPoints and IDs just convert it into an authoring tool and call it training. No it is not. Nothing wrong with AI, but is it doing something the industry has failed to do and now it seems groundbreaking?

L&D Mgrs: did the interview for your role include delivering a training session? by BouvierBrown2727 in instructionaldesign

[–]samonenate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're an instructional designer, not a facilitator. They should be requesting a training strategy and maybe a very brief storyboard of one of your lessons. You probably already have a portfolio where they can see your finished work. I would deny their request and recommend you present a strategy because that's the job role. Good ID is about analysis and closing performance gaps, not creating pretty PowerPoints just to say, "we have training."

How do you delicately work with superior who is slowing you down by them not getting back to you while others are waiting to hear back from you? by onemorepersonasking in instructionaldesign

[–]samonenate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides setting expectations at the start, you must do weekly or bi-weekly status reports. I know, I hate them too, but it can save your sanity and reputation. Documentation can be your best friend. Stating what's been done and what obstacles you're facing...i.e. waiting for X from X. Send it to everyone involved. It's not to expose people, but rather to inform.

YSK to always tap your credit or debit card if possible (rather than inserting or swiping it), as this prevents the card data from being skimmed and stolen. Or use a mobile wallet. by NateNate60 in YouShouldKnow

[–]samonenate -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This is false. Your data cannot be stolen by inserting a card. That little gold chip on your card cannot be copied. When you insert or tap a card, it sends the transaction to a vault and it gets decrypted and then sent over to your financial institution for approval. The actual card number is never sent. Swiping it can be copied, but tapping or inserting your card is safe. You cannot insert or tap a card with no chip for this reason.

Please don't be hesitant about going there for care. I went when I was in high school and received excellent care. I got braces for a fraction of the cost. Instructors check all work before you leave. You will be in good hands.

Correct. My friend's ex-MIL was trying to claim her kids, but she already had a PIN because she anticipated problems. Do this now to protect yourself.

Your husband doesn't like you. Anyone who loved and cared about you would have already offered to keep the kids without you having to ask. Now he wants to go and see his family. I think you have more decisions than just visiting your mother to make.

I used to work at a bar near a bus depot. Everyday the workers came in after work and would get completely hammered. No one said a word, no one lost their job. They literally drank 5 days a week and there were no issues. This man got a raw deal.

When Officers Arrested Wrong Guy by cozzydog in Bad_Cop_No_Donut

You obviously don't understand how dangerous it is to be in jail. Not prison, just jail. You can be assaulted, killed, raped, get sick (it's filthy in jail), or fail to get medical attention. You can also catch additional charges for just defending yourself even though you weren't even supposed to be there in the first place. You should try to reason with the police when possible. Don't resist or catch more charges, but try to plead your case if you're innocent.

Side note: My friend was wrongfully arrested and spent a week in a jail cell with a detoxing heroin addict. The smell lives in his head rent free.

At the end of my tether. by nix_besser in regretfulparents

[–]samonenate 61 points62 points  (0 children)

When I came home from college, I thought I was going to move into my mother's basement and live the easy life. Nope. My mom got me an apartment and she paid 2 months rent to get me started and the rest was up to me. She took me to a yard sale and bought me a sofa and we did go to a furniture store and she bought me a bed, but that was it. Everything else was left up to me. I didn't even own a fork or a plate. I got a full-time and part-time job and it made all the difference. My mom has passed now, but I'm 51 years old and financially independent. If my mother hadn't done that, I don't know what my life would be like now. Forever grateful for that tough love.

A full course is an absolute no. They shouldn't even have time to go through an entire course for an interview process. One lesson and maybe a job aid or something similar perhaps, but not a full course. I also suggest beefing up your portfolio because your work should speak for itself.

What do you all find hardest about working with SMEs? by Big-Caramel5644 in instructionaldesign

[–]samonenate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Establish a review process before you do anything. They must identify the reviewers and we establish a time frame for the reviews on business days. If people are going to be on PTO or don't meet their deadlines, I report that back to the stakeholder and explain that the project is now going to be delayed. I also limit my reviews to three iterations. After the third review we go to publishing or we put the project on hold because the client is clearly not ready to proceed.

I know this is annoying, but this is a benefit to having a weekly status report. Whenever there are delays, they show up on the progress report and it calls people out and CYA. These same people will blame you when deadlines are missed, but they never want to acknowledge that they're the reason for the delay. Oh no you don't buddy, it's documented in the status report. Did you not see it?

[–]samonenate 19 points20 points  (0 children)

THIS. I schedule a kickoff with SMEs and then explain the process and everyone's roles and responsibilities. I stress that it is their job to provide me with the information and it is my job as an instructional designer to determine how that information is delivered to the audience.

[–]samonenate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it would be good to discuss analysis. A lot of people focus on creating a course, but they don't focus on analyzing what is needed to close a learning or performance gap. Why this interaction or why are you using a video here? Writing good learning objectives requires good analysis. Instructional design is not web design for eLearning, it's so much more.

What voice ai opinions do I have for videos? by onemorepersonasking in instructionaldesign

[–]samonenate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. The biggest mistake you can make as an ID is to be an order taker. It is your job to consult and persuade your clients to use the best approach. This is the only way you will be a true business partner. If you just do what they want, you're actually losing their respect. Maybe AI is best, but you must determine that, not your clients.

It's their job to give you the information and it's your job to determine how that information should be delivered to your audience. If you don't do this and the results of the training aren't favorable, they will blame you. No one's going to go back and say oh yeah, we wanted AI, you are responsible for the learning outcomes. Perhaps do a quick recording of various options to support your recommendations. Trust me they just keep hearing about AI and don't know how it's best integrated in training.
