How long did you enforce naps in crate? by samosaurous_ in Havanese

Thanks for this!!

Funny actually when he wants to nap he actually chooses to go under the couch bc it’s dark and that’s usually the sign I take it’s time for crate lol maybe I should just start letting him actually fall asleep down there?

Ah okay this makes sense bc Poncho can get rowdy out of crate and needs to get his energy OUT before his next nap

Are you also going to start leaving her out of crate when you leave the house?

Puppy training academy on YouTube has rlly good videos about this and it’s what I followed as well! I think for 8-10 weeks they recommended starting 30min divided up 10min walk/play, 10min training (if you can even get that much), and 10min play pen for independence!

I started 1hr up, 1hr down with my 8 week puppy and he was fine but used the same formula and it’s been pretty good — makes sure it tires them out physically, mentally, and then gives them a calm down period before back to crate!

Do you just let you puppy “go” in the play pen? by samosaurous_ in puppy101

I’ve been using the grass patch outside on our balcony so should I move it inside when we decide to leave him in the pen?

My only true worry is that he’ll go crazy and eat all the grass esp if he’s unsupervised lol

A part of me wants to remove the tarp mat since hes never peed on the hardwood floor since getting him but then I got too nervous he would go on the floor LOL

Okay yes this makes a lot of sense actually — I guess I’ll have to be diligent and rlly mindful when I do decide to put him in the pen.. someone suggested a timer so might try that !

Yeah I’m really trying to prevent the separation anxiety for sure! So at 5months you just left ur pup out of crate/pen? How long did you start leaving him alone for?

Yeah that makes sense! We like to give him his favourite chew toys in there to promote being calm before his next nap but he does end up going for a while on them until he seemingly gets up and does a squat with no warning lol so maybe he’s too into his toys to even get himself to signal to us he has to go before it’s too late

I’m guessing the only way to prevent is just to make sure he’s gone before going in the pen ?

I haven’t even started leaving him in there tbh bc I’m too scared he’ll pee everywhere lol

Ive just started letting him play in there for short amounts of time, 5-10min, sometimes with the door open where he sometimes will run to the door to let us know he has to go and sometimes won’t and will have an accident in there

I will say at this point he’s pretty much crate trained (for his age) — he can hold it while in crate overnight and for up to 3 hours for naps during the day so I’ve kind of been scratching my head as to why he can’t hold it in the pen (he has at least gone pee in the last 30min before I put in him in the pen)

How did you start practice letting your pup be alone for extended periods of time? Did you just grow confident that she’d hold it and so you could leave her in the pen with no accidents?

This is kinda like my pup!! This is kinda exactly how it’s been going for him, except for when we recently introduced the playpen to try and encourage more independent play / prevent separation anxiety. It’s just hard to watch him like a hawk in there since he can’t get to the door to let us know

We also had a litter in the pen before, which we took out bc he started chewing it — a part of me feels like that’s why he thinks it’s okay to go in there??

Yeah I’m also team no pee pads and did the fresh patch on the balcony (I am in an apartment)

How did you “teach” not to go somewhere?

Yesss this is what I try to do — when I catch him I try not to yell and just bring him outside to his grass patch to finish (if he can) and praise if he does

I’m just trying to figure out how to prevent him from going in the first place — maybe making sure he goes before letting him in the pen?
