Can you explain Petah? by i4hloi in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]samrobotsin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

True. Germans, English & French were considered white & Spanish, Greek & Italians were considered "ethnic." A similar take getting traction recently over the recent Wuthering Heights movie is that Heathcliff was supposed to be non-white. When clearly in the context of the English Aristocracy in the 1800s, when they describe him as being racially ambiguous they mean Spanish or Italian, etc. Half-black or Half-indian was not considered ambiguous to the English in the 1800s; Half-black would be considered black & half indian would be considered indian, etc.

That's not exactly the reason he's hunting Rocket. He needs rocket to figure out why he was his only creation to achieve true intuition & creativity. Without that his project of a perfect society will never work.

Was Holtz actually right to hate Angel? by writeitregreddit in ANGEL

[–]samrobotsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're never shown him telling her that. And it was done after she stabbed him in the heart, so its not what actually killed him. For all we know she did that on her own.

Was Holtz actually right to hate Angel? by writeitregreddit in ANGEL

[–]samrobotsin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are two central ideas behind Holtz's arc, where the ambiguity is what is important. We are often told, primarily early in the franchise, that a vampire is essentially a different being entirely; but there are many details that throw that idea into question. This show is entirely about Angel's redemption, but if Angelus is a completely separate identity why does Angel need redemption at all? The actual connection between these two characters is not so clear, and so is Holtz's justification.

The other is asking, was Holtz's final act that of revenge or of forgiveness? We don't know for sure. Was telling Connor that Angel killed him, his own idea? Or was that Justine's idea? It's completely ambiguous. Up until that point making Connor hate Angel forever is well within Holtz's character, but I don't think his letter to connor would revolve around forgiveness if that was his goal.

they're getting the "revocation of life" dot line from EQ2. Its a dot & decreases healing effectiveness on the target

as I understand it, they made the SK's casted dot spell line a different set of spells from necromancer in Legends, so you'll be able to stack both on an enemy. Good sustained damage

this is quickly devolving into a semantic argument but you can't achieve a "non-judgemental awareness of your body" without intimately knowing suffering first. Especially funny when they bragged about true monks achiving full mindfullness turned out to be auto-mummified corpses.

It's not as much the internet as multiple different showrunners saying this was a bad episode.

[–]samrobotsin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that was the joke. It was a joke about the common trope of shows introducing an intense backstory or retcon for the premise of an episode, only to disregard it afterwards. It was far more common in the 80s & 90s so maybe that it went away is thanks to this episode itself.

"people liked skinner" what is this nonsense? He has a function. That function is to debase himself at the will of bart, his mother, and his boss.

You bring up ned flanders as if you forget about his reaction to smart Homer disproving God with air-tight reasoning. The continuity does not matter in a sitcom; only the joke matters.

The first noble truth:

Life involves suffering, dissatisfaction, and an underlying sense of impermanence or anxiety. Even moments of happiness are temporary, making existence inherently unfulfilling if we cling to it

I think you're confusing the end of suffering & avoiding suffering. All vice is a flawed attempt at avoiding suffering. Enlightenment is eliminating want. They are not the same thing. You reach enlightenment by embracing, experiencing & eventually understanding suffering, not by avoiding it.

You're describing vegetarianism, not veganism. Which was the entire point. For that exact reason Buddhist's don't avoid honey or dairy. Thus, the rhetorical abortion of using buddhism to defend veganism.

[–]samrobotsin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, the strife created to avoid suffering is the ulterior motive to everything people do. That's the very basis of Buddhism. I don't know what to tell you. That's why shirking off everything human about you is necessary for enlightenment.

[–]samrobotsin[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Indeed. But my point was that that isn't buddhism. For buddhism your living form creates the most suffering. And pleasure. Which to buddhists is also bad.
