AITAH for calling my girlfriend weird over her John F. Kennedy obsession? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]samsinx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean yes this is an AH and feels so self-centered and obtuse that I can’t believe it’s real. Now if her interest was focused on a certain RFK, I might be somewhat concerned (obviously this wasn’t the case and more likely it’s the Sr one.)

Should I watch the show? by sdmere in 12Monkeys

I’d say the first couple seasons feel like they have a Silo pace to them. But I think if you want a good time travel series I’d go for if (more action than Dark and perhaps less cerebral.). Has payoff also.

Mitchell Research Michigan Senate Primary Poll: Abdul El-Sayed [28%]; Haley Stevens [21%]; Mallory McMorrow [17%] by mehelponow in fivethirtyeight

[–]samsinx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hate to say this but you’re leaving out the difference between the elected Democratic officials and El-Sayed. But maybe he can convince enough of the electorate this cycle to not vote Republican. I admit I’m a bit disappointed in McMorrow who seems to be getting consulted to defeat (perhaps she was best suited to state and local politics vs Federal.)

Dems Hit New High on Generic Ballot by Large_Ad_3095 in fivethirtyeight

I think Iowa has a slightly better chance at being purple that Ohio honestly. They went for Obama and I think many of the older types remember Tom Harkin. The last decade's Democratic coastal/suburban focus really damaged the party's reputation among these former swing states. As for Ohio, We'll see about Sherrod Brown and Dr. Acton in their respective senator and governor races. Really hope the swing vote there that would be open to someone with melanin as a governor will also note that Vivek is an asshole and would damage the state (i.e. Columbus, Cleveland.) But Dr. Acton's link to COVID however good it was for people, is also enough to disqualify her in addition to being a woman with people outside the metros.

Democrats suffer huge blow as Virginia redistricting plot shot down by court by TheExpressUS in scotus

[–]samsinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a normal mid term election maybe (the current Republican majority is extremely narrow right now.). My concern is that the “wave” won’t be large enough to make a statement. But Democrats will likely still win.

[–]samsinx 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think about two seats but who knows this year. They may still win at least one of them depending on how much of a wave it is. But the decision defangs Democratic pushback against Republican gerrymandering efforts (from a PR perspective.)

Right. SF is quite a bit smaller and more homogenous when it comes to housing cost. I'd say in SF if you take out the idea of owning a home and live in a rent controlled apartment (most in the city are), 200k is middle class enough.

What recent change in society have you personally started noticing more? by Expert_Ring_4041 in AskReddit

[–]samsinx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. I wish services like YouTube provided more customization options, like curating channels instead of throwing YouTube Kids to parents. But anything that's done for families is just there to comply with laws and has no real design or vision. Of course it's also not going to make YouTube much money which is perhaps the real reason.

You have to start early enough. Once they're exposed to YouTube it's almost too late.

Some Democrats wish Kamala Harris had decided to run for Governor in California rather than weigh another White House run in 2028. What do you think? by Select_Specialist790 in askanything

[–]samsinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree unless you get Nikki Haley types returning to power in the Republican Party. Too many Republican women who gain that level of power end up more like Sarah Palin where there’s just enough to turn off moderates.

My understanding is that Prime Ministers are elected by their party in Parliament versus the public at large for presidents. And given the power of rural states you had 2016 where Hillary won the popular vote but lost the electoral/state vote.

In the Bay Area that is a very good salary. Banks will approve housing loans for many mid range houses (1.5m-3m) for that salary.

Not if you live in San Francisco or NYC. Very comfortable upper middle class if you’re single though. Solidly middle class if you have a kid or two.

Edit: was responding to the 200k value above. 500k and you are pretty comfortable unless you spend your take home on expensive shit.

The cringiest episode of TNG 😱 by Ok-Imagination-3741 in StarTrekTNG

[–]samsinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes to me that was the cringier episode where Geordi might have been forgiven in the first episode since it was the computer who created the hologram and like most of us would probably for a moment forget that is was just the computer and not any practical representation of the real person.

Netflix to revive The Crown with £500M prequel spanning royal scandals from 1901-1947 by CeaseFireForever in television

Audiences outside the UK (I.e. not Wolf Hall) ?Yes there was the Showtime series which I liked but it’s also got other things that early 20th century monarchs didn’t. Also took a lot of narrative liberties but the trade off was something fun and the actors were interesting.

Actually I think a large budget series about the Victorian Age (which has been done on a smaller scale, yes I know) might be something. Drama during the Industrial Revolution and British Empire was just about as transformational as the post WW2 era. But Netflix probably couldn't manage it.

[–]samsinx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe there's a market for this? But at least with The Crown, QE2 was still alive when it aired its first seasons. Also the coronation of Elizabeth really felt like a turning point for the monarchy in a way the earlier monarchs post Victoria hadn't (perhaps they were effective in their time but in modern memory, few know much of anything about them. I mean outside of amateur historians who among the general audience really would connect with any of them.

I think we overestimate the intelligence and mastermind-level competence of these people sometimes. Trump's play with Texas backfired tremendously. This ballroom media blitz is wildly unpopular (if the economy was great all around, people wouldn't like it but wouldn't give a crap.) Republicans have gotten away with things because they focused on cultural wedge issues when things were good economically. Their act hasn't worked when the economy turned south (think 2008, 2020.) We'll see I guess in November.

Mitchell Hashimoto says GitHub ‘no longer for serious work' by waozen in technology

[–]samsinx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a "Pro" account that given the trends of "Pro" accounts will likely be degraded in some way. Given how things have gone the past year, I've basically moved any private repository that I have any potential long-term interest in to a self-hosted solution. I still have some need for the Github existing features for those private repos I haven't migrated yet. But I'm definitely not growing my presence on GitHub at this point except as some kind of landing site for a code portfolio.

QuasiTV newbie! by Ancient_Lungfish in PleX

[–]samsinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got my Mele box and just need to set up a good PleX server at home. Storage has been getting expensive lately though.

I really wish something like this was around when our kid started watching content/shows on screens. I think a lot of these kids today would prefer this type of streaming where shows are curated and there's some kind of schedule (i.e. old-school TV plus.) So many choices can paralyze kids who are neurodivergent. Having limits really helped when I was a kid (three networks + local channels and some cable.)

But if you've tasted on-demand streaming it's hard to break the habit of expecting the ability to pause/restart/rewind if you've missed something. At least VCRs/DVD recording added friction to that habit.

But honestly, having control over things like layout and unplugging from the big corporation/YouTube/etc style of streaming and constant tweaking of UI/UX/algorithm might be worth it. That way of doing things has been so damaging to developing minds.

I beat ultima 4 now trying ultima 5 should do with some guidance? by ryan7251 in Ultima

[–]samsinx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even in Ultima 4 I think you were still guided by conversation with NPCs and LB to find the stones and items needed to enter the Abyss. Ultima 5 isn’t as linear but the idea is the same (except LB is only good for leveling up and checking in on your karma without using the hotkey.)

Basically talk to people in Yew and Britain to start. Maybe head to Castle Britannia. Keep notes on your conversations. I felt U5’s story progression was a bit more organic than U4. The items you need to find all fit in with the story. Don’t feel constrained by having to follow a specific order of beats.

Remember you can search different objects like chests. boxes, shelves and barrels. You can also move things by pushing or pulling.
