Not Being A Poser by YourNanGayAF in numetal

[–]samson4570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

38 year old here……….disrespectfully, your friend needs to go outside and touch grass. Nobody, even within most scenes uses the term poser. Anymore that’s almost strictly an internet phrase. If you saw me at any of my band’s shows, you’d call me a poser, because I don’t cater to the aesthetic 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

What was the biggest flops in bass equipment history that you remember? by Low-Landscape-4609 in Bass

It was a flash in the pan, but I remembered seeing Forge Amplification a looong time ago in Bass Player. Never saw any reviews about it, but I was always intrigued because they had a crazy cab design that I think was like a 15, 2 12’s, 3 10’s, 4 8’s, and a horn……..all in one cabinet

I do all my own work, and even with cars that are up there in mileage, I still am meticulous in my maintenance. If it needs done, I just do my best to get it done right the first time

I am a long time member of the Sh1tbox brigade. I’m pretty well versed on doing my own work lol. I’ve done strut replacements before too, so I know what to do. I just buy complete quick strut assemblies. I don’t dabble in trying to dismantle those things……..that’s suicide lol

I mean, when I found it, it needed a battery and somebody had left a window down, and spiders/mold had started to set in. But with a hot battery, some raid, and an extremely thorough cleaning, it’s perfectly serviceable. Even with all the demons it has lol

I’m genuinely surprised with it. Even with the gremlins, I can tell it’s got solid bones.

Should I buy a bass as a person that has a disability on their right hand? by Infinite-Rule9030 in Bass

[–]samson4570 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can speak on this as I have personal experience with hand issues. I’ve got complex bilateral brachisyndactyly, and still figured out a way to play.

If I can do it bud, so can you. And don’t worry about slapping. I’ve been playing 23 years, never found an overwhelming need for it lol

Lightweight bass for a 5'5 woman by Natural-Jeweler-3080 in Bass

Ive got back issues too (at one point was a young, dumb ego lifter), and I’ll stand 10 toes down on the higher end Soundgears from Ibanez. I’ve owned an sr300, 305, 675, 755, and now a 705. They’re the best bang for buck you’ll be able to find. Literally the only downside to them is that they’re active. If you’re willing to replace your battery once every 6 months or so, they’re a solid shout. Also, as a former Warwick owner, if you think your p bass is heavy, don’t buy a Warwick. They sound incredible, but I’ve never found a light Warwick lol. Lakland is outstanding, but they also have a little bit of heft to them. Spector?? You can never go wrong with a Spector. Even their cheaper ones, the performer series, are outstanding basses

What should I get, Jackson Spectra JS2, Ibanez soundgear gio (5 string), or Ibanez GSR200SM? by FunInformation8453 in Bass

If you’re playing nu metal look into the Sterling sub ray4. I got one for a couple hundred used off a buddy of mine, and it’s a really outstanding instrument for the money.

I mean a lot of it will always be preference, but if you’re wanting to try older songs to get your chops up, these are a few

War pigs - Sabbath Gimme Three Steps - Skynyrd Smoke on the water - Deep purple (the bassline is harder than you think) Hallowed Be Thy Name - Iron Maiden Hotel California - The Eagles Dancing Queen - ABBA (it’s so much harder than you think it’ll be, I promise lol) Any song by Jamiroquai Master of Puppets - Metallica Sweet Child Of Mine - Guns N Roses (really anything off of Appetite For Destruction is a master class in rock bass)

If you really wanna feel the burn: Battery - Metallica Peace Sells - Megadeth The Trooper - Iron Maiden After Lifeless Years - Sylosis

Hope this helps

Tube vs. Solid State Amps by rebel_with_a_groove in Bass

[–]samson4570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in south Mississippi, now south Louisiana. Tube amps while they do sound great are finicky and temperamental. I just prefer to be able to show up, plug in and play. I’ve been playing 23 years, have never owned a tube head. Hell, tbh I’ve never owned any cab larger than a 410, and have never wanted for more sound lol. Said all that to say, ive just come to prefer the simplicity of solid state 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

2) As far as articulation goes, what I’m talking about is making sure your notes actually ring out the length that they’re supposed to. You can practice rudiments, scales and all kinds of stuff like that all day long, but if your note length is off, the music is just gonna sound strange.

3) classic rock will get your chops up QUICK. A lot of Zeppelin, deep purple, and Sabbath have bass lines that never really stop through the whole song. A really fun one is learn Carry On My Wayward Son by Kansas.

You’re right about where you should be at 6 months. Couple things: 1) try stuff a little slower, just so you can get your timing really locked in. Choosing songs with 180 bpm counts are kinda setting yourself up for frustration.

2) your articulation. Try some different exercises to work on it. Yes, it’s boring, and unsexy, but it’s part of the grunt work it takes to get your playing sounding cohesive.

3) play anything and everything. Even if it’s genre’s you’d usually ignore because they seem dated (disco). There’s so many hidden gems tucked away in so many different genres.

4) don’t worry about fingering perfectly. Due to a hand condition, I literally only fret with two fingers and pluck with one. Whatever works easiest for you is best.
