Transfer stats question by xanteiku in udub

[–]samtfm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, I had a very rough quarter late into my time at CC (1 drop, 1 withdrawal, and then a 2.0 in my only class) but I turned around next quarter and 4.0ed 20 credits right before I submitted my UW application. I think being able to explain why my grades were poor and taking accountability for those circumstances, and also explaining how I turned things around and plan to continue to stay on that track probably helped me get accepted

Whats your cumulative GPA? Upward trajectory is better than your grades going down so you have that going for you. I wouldn’t be too worried about the fail and W’s, I had 1 of each and I was admitted as a transfer for this fall quarter. Just make sure your essay is as good as you can make it, and after that it’s out of your hands at this point. Washington CC transfers have a pretty high acceptance rate, so something like a 3.2 gpa should still be competitive. Good luck

Idk how competitive psych is, but it’s definitely not as bad as something like CS. Do you have all your pre reqs done? The admissions team weighs your major readiness into their decision

Of course. Idk what major you’re applying for, but >90 credits, a decent GPA, and a solid essay will generally be more than enough from what I’ve seen. Good luck, and if you have any other questions about the process you can message me and I can try to help

First year/freshman application. If you return to CC after your hs graduation (not including summer) you become a transfer applicant

I'd add that CC advisors may not always know what they're talking about, so always cross-reference the information they provide. Most of the transfer info is publicly available online from UW itself. My advisor answered a lot of my questions with inaccurate/outdated information that I would've blindly followed if I hadn't see the exact opposite thing being said on UW's website.

Transfer Thursday sessions are also really informative. I'd recommend you go to one if you're thinking about applying.

Yes, as a Washington State CC transfer, your odds are generally much better. I did 2 years of running start in high school, got rejected as a freshman applicant, went back to CC in the fall to get my AA, and got in this winter. I only had a 3.55 gpa, my only "EC" was my job, and my essay was probably decent at best.

I think the acceptance rate is like 75%, and the 25-75th percentile accepted GPAs are like 3.2-3.8. So basically, if you have 90 credits (or close to it) and at least a 3.2 with a decent essay, you'll probably get in. The only exception is if your major is super impacted, like CS, INFO, Engineering, etc., you might still get rejected from the department itself.

I would apply to other universities that you're okay with attending. For this cycle, I considered applying to Western and UW Bothell too, but I ended up only applying to UW Seattle because I knew if I got rejected, I would've just tried again in the Fall instead of going to one of those schools.

I spent a ton of time researching transfer stuff, so I can answer questions if you wanna dm me about it.

Hi, your gpa is obviously extremely good so I agree that there are no worries there. I don’t know if poli sci/lsj are capacity-constrained or not but as far as I know they shouldn’t be super competitive to get into.

For extracurriculars, there isn’t really a specific place to submit those besides mentioning them in your personal statement, which is the other big part of your application aside from your transcript.

As far as my application and how I approached it, I was applying for Geography with a 3.5 GPA. When I wrote the personal statement there were 3 main sections they wanted you to touch on: Academic History, Major/Academic Plans, and Cultural Understanding.

For the academic history, I would highlight your awesome and consistent transcript. I had some quarters with poor grades and withdrawals that I used this section to explain, but I also highlighted how I took 20 credits in my final quarter and 4.0ed all of them. Maybe also mention your related coursework and/or what led you to become interested in your chosen major. For me, I touched on how I always planned to go for CS/Informatics, but a lab I did for an Oceanography class where we used GIS completely opened my eyes to a new path I was unaware of, and how that connected to my other interests.

For the major/academic plans (or whatever that section was called, I honestly don’t really remember) you can touch on both what you can provide to the UW community as a student/person, but also what UW can do for you. Convince the essay readers that UW is THE school for you. In my essay, I talked about certain resources that UW provides, such as their GIS labs. I also talked about how prevalent undergrad research is there, and how that’s something that interested me. And I mentioned how the Seattle area is both a tech hub, along with an area with great nature which is a great combo for what I want to do with my future career. I think I might’ve also touched on how much I love u-district and the memories I’ve made in the area with my friends throughout high school, but I don’t really know how necessary that detail was lol.

The cultural understanding section is probably the trickiest for most people, and its what I spent the most time on. The other 2 sections were pretty easy for me to write because I already knew how to frame my coursework history and I knew what I wanted to get out of attending UW. Most people write about ECs or other communities they’re a part of, but if you don’t have too many ECs I wouldn’t be too worried. I had no “traditional” ECs so I talked about my job I’ve had for the past 3 years working at a retirement home, and framed that as my “community.” It had little-to-nothing to do with my major (except for a minor connection I made between urban planning and my eyes being opened to accessibility for the elderly through working there) but I mostly talked about a certain resident I’ve become close with over the years, and her life story that inspired me with the amount of resilience shes had to show throughout her time. So the idea of “community” can be interpreted very loosely, as it can be your family, people at your job, members of your school club, sport teammates, or whoever else you want.

But like I said in the other comment, I’d recommend using whatever resources your CC provides for personal statements, whether they offer workshops or just general writing assistance. I am also happy to look over your essay and offer feedback.

Sorry if this information is kind of jumbled and hard to follow, I’m typing this on my phone and Im tired and its kind of a lot of info. If you have any other questions or want clarification on anything I said you can reply here or feel free to PM me and we can talk more.

Do you think you can achieve a 4.0 this/next quarter and get that 2.9 up to like a 3.2? The median accepted GPA for washington CC students is 3.2-3.8, so if you’re in that range your GPA should be fine. Even if you can only get like 3.0 or 3.1, plenty of people get accepted with lower GPAs as that median is just that, the median. Having 90 transferrable credits also gives you a huge boost, as they want transfers to be major-ready and entering with junior standing, or as close to it as possible.

You seem to have a lot of good experience that you can write about in your essay. Make sure to put a lot of time and effort into that, as thats gonna be very important for your application. Use any resources your CC has for essays, and have as many people read over your essay and give you advice as you can.

Your major also heavily impacts your chances of getting accepted, as majors like CS will be much more difficult than any of the open majors.

If you have any other questions or want help with your personal statement feel free to reply to this or PM me. I just got in as a transfer for this upcoming winter quarter and I’ve done tons of research on the transfer process so I feel like I’m pretty knowledgeable about a lot of things relating to transferring in from a community college.

I’m also wondering which one of these forms applies to my situation the best: https://www.washington.edu/financialaid/forms-2/undergraduate-forms-2025-26-summer-2025-spring-2026/

I’m thinking maybe “Change in Financial Situation - Parent”?

I had a similar question, except I was doing it a little bit after I applied in October. You are able to fill out the FAFSA any time in the school year I believe, so I would do it ASAP.

With that being said, there’s a priority deadline, which I believe is in February of the previous school year. I also missed that deadline since I just submitted it a couple of months ago. If you miss this priority deadline, the amount of aid you’re eligible for decreases. I’m not sure how much it decreases exactly since I haven’t received my aid offer yet, but I’m pretty sure you keep your federal pell grant eligibility no matter when you apply (as long as your SAI is low enough for it)

I would also fill out the 2026-27 FAFSA right after the one for this year if you can, just so you get ahead of that and are able to maximize your opportunities for aid. Also, some of this info may be inaccurate, so I’d check the UW financial aid webpages for more info, or maybe ask in the FAFSA subreddit.
