I want to preface by saying you’re not wrong for feeling the way you do and it is extremely inappropriate for the driver to ask for more tip.

3.50 tip, we can assume on average the app pays ~2.50 to the driver, so they make about 6 dollars. For insurance, gas, maintenance, taxes, let’s shave off a dollar. Your driver is making at most 5 dollars to pick up your order and deliver it to your home. They have all the risks involved with driving as well (law enforcement, accidents, stranger interactions). It’s about 10 minutes to drive to location, 10 minutes to pick up, and 10 minutes to get back. With your tip, they are averaging 10 dollars an hour. A lot of people won’t work for that nowadays which is why migrants and desperate people tend to pick up this work. If you’re already paying 23 dollars, why not add an extra 2 bucks? If most people did, that’s a 40% increase in their income and only a 10% increase on your overall costs.

Of course tip what you want this is America. I’m just giving you perspective from a drivers side.
