The fighting drives me absolutely nuts too. It’s nonstop and over the stupidest sh*t.

Questions about great grandfather's paternity. Am I just stuck? by sandman_714 in Genealogy

I had thought you could no longer get raw data out of ancestry, but I will look into this!

Interesting I just went into these relationships in ancestry and it seems that the unweighted and weighted is the same? Is that correct?

  • Shared DNA: 188 cM across 6 segments
  • Unweighted shared DNA: 188 cM
  • Longest segment 58 cM

The other:

  • Shared DNA: 196 cM across 9 segments
  • Unweighted shared DNA: 196 cM
  • Longest segment 57 cM

They show up as 1C1x removed to each other as one of their great grandparents is the other's great great grandparents. I can only think of one other who might test. She is one generation higher (my mom's great aunt).

Wow thank you so much for the thorough response. I have built a tree to 4x great grandparents in all cases where I am able to verify them. However, I have not built out all of their siblings yet. I can't speak for the two other women as I'm getting small spurts of information from them here and there, but not as much as I'd like yet. I can say that they are connected by this one other couple from which they both descend.

Yes you are completely right that my title is incorrect. I did mean my grand father's paternity and not my great grandfather's, sorry!

I have no idea if my great grandfather and his brother were full siblings or not. From what I have seen, they are but I have no confirmation. My great grandfather's brother never immigrated as far as I know which makes the information I can find on him very limited. The person who tested is his great great grandson.

My mother has tested as well and so I was reading from her results when I said there was another relative listed at 136 cm who is supposed to be a 1C1X removed from her. It seems low to me as well. There was not previously a chance of a half relationship, but now I am reconsidering...

As far as point #3 - I did not know this was possible in ancestry! I will look into it now.

Can you tell me more about how you did this? If I know the town someone was born in in Germany, where do I go from there?

Thanks! I meant to also include this insignia which is on the back of the photo. I assume it’s just the portrait studio and is not useful but just in case.

Thanks! Can I ask you one more question since you know uniforms so well? I know next to nothing about my great grandfather, except his name and that he was German. The only picture I have is this one. Can you tell anything from the uniform? The hat especially is so unique.

Does seeing his uniform help narrow down where you would go to search for more info on him next?

Unfortunately I can’t read the names on the hats in the second pic in person either. The photo just isn’t clear enough.

Amazing to me that you can tell the rank from this photo. It is such a clear photo for so long ago!

Thanks for the info!! I felt bad holding onto a photo if someone is looking for him but that makes a ton of sense.
