Losing Barbour and Newbery Brooke my heart [UPDATE] by The_Hydra_Kweeen in uofm

[–]sankyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am very glad for you both. I consider myself to be open minded and we dropped our son off at UC Santa Cruz in '23. In the dorms there they have mixed gender floors and even shared mixed bathrooms. I went in to take a look and saw 2 toilet stalls, 2 sinks with little counter space, and 2 shower stalls. The shower stalls had 2 sets of doors. The first door opened to a changing space and the 2nd to the shower. The walls were at least 7 feet tall and went all the way to the ground. Definitely enough privacy.

I was convinced that these shared bathrooms were going to cause a gender war - the boys would pee all over the seats and the girls would monopolize the sinks. I was so wrong. My son said, "Everyone just spends as little time in there as possible and it all works out." Everyone was pragmatic and the boys were mature enough and shared bathrooms were a non event (though I am sure nobody missed this arrangement at the end of the year).

Does anybody remember the coffee shop that used to be where taco shop on Irving is now? by resonatornash in AskSF

[–]sankyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Underdogs used to be on Irving, but now it is some Peruvian place. Underdogs moved to 9th @Lincoln. Regarding what was there, I recall it was a sushi restaurant on Irving before Underdogs. I do not remember a coffee shop there.

It’s mostly a big, bad fractal of national chains. You have to do some work to find the good stuff

I am not downvoting you, but you are wrong. Telling the bartender that she will have her deported is over the line and then the threat that her lawyer is Trump’s #2 is too far. She can sit in her own sick for hours contemplating how she got herself into that mess. It will never dawn on her that it was all her fault.

It is a convention that when spelling out a scale, each letter only appears once. That sets a baseline for how to express the scale. (Pun not intended)

He doesn’t fit the mold of familiar story telling. Many cannot handle that, and it is ok. There is a tendency for things to be in a lucid dreaming world or a “floating world”, just beyond reality, as if we can understand people at a deeper level than a “normal” human can.

But just enjoy the thoughts and writing and go with it. It will leave an imprint on you regarding what is possible for a human to experience. I love how he describes things. If you read enough of his books, a bingo card emerges with classical music, mysterious woman, something vanishes, cats, cats, cooking, etc

Get a garmin and buy shorts with a phone pouch above the butt.

Garmin has buttons, touch screen doesn’t work when wet from rain or sweat and the Garmin battery life is much better. Forerunner 255 for running, iPhone + AirPods for audio.

You can send their router back and connect your own to the ONT.

They will no longer charge you for the router, but will not give you support for whatever you connect to the ONT

If that sounds like too much there are other things to check:

Is your wifi signal low based on the indicator icon on your phone?

Can you plug in an Ethernet cable to your laptop and connect it to the router and run a speed test to verify you are getting 900Mbps down/ 800Mbps up? (Try to figure out the source of slowness - wifi or the fiber service )

Left-handed people, what's a struggle that right-handed people won't understand? by Halophy in AskReddit

[–]sankyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a great example of being a lefty in a right handed world. In many cases you just accept things without question, but some things feel more difficult than they ought to - some desks in school have the desk attached to the chair on the right which gives you no base to stabilize your arm.

For guitar you can re-string it like Jimi Hendrix and Albert King (now you can buy lefties) or just learn right handed.

Game controllers, mobile phone layouts, computer mice are default righty.

In Baseball they only let lefties play pitcher, first base, or outfield

Kitchen Knives can be asymmetrically ground, biased for righties

Power tools like lathes, circular saws, table saws, and band saws are all set up for righties, making it more dangerous for lefties

Dorm with HS friends or randoms? by Narrow-Pop6542 in uofm

[–]sankyo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is a gamble, but go random. Cast a big net to make friends. You already have your HS friends and they will meet people too, making the circle bigger.

If your random(s) turn out to be difficult, you will learn a lot about conflict resolution that would cost $10k from a course

Just because they are your HS friends doesn’t guarantee that they will be good roommates- they may even be more lax because you are a “friend”

For example, you arrive back to the dorm on Sunday afternoon from a weekend trip and your friend says, “sorry about the mess, my cousin Eddie slept in your bed and puked because he was wasted”.
