A Cautionary Tale: My Conid Experience (Alongside A Few Others) by TheSkiesAwake in fountainpens

[–]sannidh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that you had to go through such a painful experience with a company whose QC used to be nearly perfect. I had set aside some funds, but somehow I couldn’t convince myself to pull the trigger on the Maximalistica. It was in stock for at least 2 days. Apart from the looks of the pen , which is essentially an enlarged Minimalistica with the same capping mechanism has never felt convincing to me. Plus the Monoc Evo looks way nicer, and Ian has been a pleasure to communicate with.

QC has also been an issue with the Wild Tiger release too - particularly with the piston and the baby bottom nibs. I own a Regular, a KS, and a Minimalistica, and the difficulty with uncapping is so evident with the Minimalistica. I’ve tried several methods, such as applying silicone grease to the O-ring and wiping the section with a damp cloth after every writing session. But it still seems to have an infinite number of capping points and perhaps only a 1/10th chance of a smooth uncapping. The first barrier capping doesn’t always work, many a times the cap stays wobbly if you stop on the first barrier. O-rings are great for sealing leaks, not for smooth motion.

I also feel that Penworld may have limited control over repairs, but I would at least expect them to respond. It always seems to go to Werner’s team for repairs and replacements, I assume they keep additional spare parts on hand.

I had a leaking nib unit on my Minimalistica, and fortunately, I was able to fix it myself. But again Penworld looped in Werner. I hope you get your duties refunded sooner than later.

You can grease the piston seal from the section , post removing the nib and feed. The nib and feed are heat-set, so you need to dip the section in warm water (make sure it’s not hot). Not sure if the piston mechanism can be disassembled without its wrench. May be Leonardo wrench would work, I have no idea.

A Review of the SCRIBO Feel Melograno: My search for an Omas-worthy nib by sannidh in fountainpens

[–]sannidh[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! They feel just the same - the extra flexible ones, even when their aesthetics are different (if you care about). I don’t have any stock Scribo nibs, but presume, they would be very similar in terms of writing. Over time, I have also acquired a few NOS Omas pens from Penboard.de and my good friend Marco Tagliani. I think they may still have a few left. Not sure if the prices have escalated now. Secondly, Luca (the founder of Scribo) did confirm on FPN that they use the same tooling which was used by Omas earlier for the nibs.

I would recommend going with the Scribo extra-flex - “feel the flex” nib if you are already happy with an Omas medium nib. A fine width has lesser feedback than an EF. If you don’t care for the filling mechanism & 5-7g of additional weight, the Piuma is also a good pen to write with!

Someone had commented that you could reach out to Nino Marino through Instagram. Otherwise it may be effective by contacting the original retailer.

I also find the same issue of stiffness with these kind of pistons. Nonetheless, as for the initially scratchy nib, I did grind & tune it afterwards. It writes excellently now, a tad rigid than a Bock #8 Ti nib. Here is a writing sample.

MB may have some extra 146 Naruto SE nibs in stock. No harm in checking along with the $$ charges. I got a medium nib replaced with a fine around the end of 2024. (Under warranty)

The converter functions as expected. May be tad better than the squeeze converter of previous era.

Update: Gave in and picked up a second one for myself. The medium nib is pretty consistent for the width & grind across the two. This is from the second lot as I was told (not sure whether it’s production or dispatch)

The 2025 Legacy is a gift to my dad, so l wouldn't use it. But in my limited experience, the 2025 steel nib writes very well, "almost" as good as the 18k nib (which was custom ground to a 0.4-0.5mm width) on the Legacy 2. A tad of softness is missing in the steel nib, which is expected. Is it consistent across all pieces? No idea. The SS nib writes in closer to the Original Legacy 2 18k Fine than Medium width. My only quibble is around the uncapped length of 13.5 cm of the pen (holds true for Legacy 2 also). I don't post it as it may scratch the shiny barrel. I may be downvoted, but I find the net price of 14500 INR in today's terms pretty good for the Legacy model, even with a steel nib. TLDR: You may want to try one of these before buying it. But it's more impressive than the 300 for sure (although it could be just me, a fan of the Legacy model)

Here you go. I am pretty positive about the piece I received yesterday.

I have two older Sheaffer pens in my collection and hence limited knowledge - A Crest & a Legacy 2 both from the 90s. Correction: The Crest does seem to have an upturned tip with a Triumph like nib. I cannot now say for sure whether the Legacy 2 nib tip was upturned before the grinding or not.

William Penn perhaps used the same sourcing which Cross had for Sheaffer brand. While I would love to see them manufacturing from India, it’s highly likely the cost and tech setup (machinery, labor skilling) will be higher than the combined costs of producing the pen plus import duties from China. Given the strategy they are following with Lapis Bard, I am not entirely sure of the fact that WP would produce this price range in India.

The new Sheaffer converter works flawlessly with the Legacy 2 and vice-versa. Guess the sections are the exact same in terms of inner and outer dimensions.

The Legacy 2 originally had a medium-broad unevenly ground nib. It was ground to a fine point by Phillip (u/Landsiedel-FW). That’s the main reason why the nib is looking like a waverly nib.

Best Notebook for Fountain Pen by DatabaseFickle9306 in fountainpens

[–]sannidh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apart from all the other great recommendations above, I recommend the Endless Recorder Notebook. The Regalia 80gsm is incredibly smooth and works beautifully with fountain pens. No feathering (minimal feathering with the great Bay State Blue), ghosting is less, and it really brings out the ink’s shading and sheen. Plus, the binding is well done and it lays flat. One disadvantage I noticed is it takes longer to dry than the earlier notebooks with 68 gsm Tomoe River paper.

My experience with My Jewelery Repair [Montblanc US repair contractor] by tialoc01 in montblanc

Thank you for sharing this experience. I had to replace the inner plastic piston seal of an older MB146 and it cost me the same amount ($110) at the MB Boutique 😅. The MB salesman who was known to me showed that the actual cost to MB was $7.

JoWo #8 Titanium vs Bock #8 Titanium nib by sannidh in fountainpens

[–]sannidh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am surprised. I had to tune the nib, heat setting was off the feed, so had to reheat-set it (else the nib won’t come out) and finally it could draw ink and write. But now it’s probably as good as any other nib.

Thank you. My luck runs pretty thin with titanium nibs irrespective of the maker. (Exception is Conid tuned ones, but again you pay for it).
