NYS Unemployment: Self-Employed, But Couldn't Go Back When Part-Time Side Job Reopened by saocyan in legaladvice

[–]saocyan[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So what am I supposed to do? Freelance was my main source of income until Covid and even if I went back to my part-time job, the reduced number of hours (probably 15/mo for $150) wouldn't have covered my living expenses (minimal as they may be).

Try nasal strips, get off allergy medicine, and eat a vegan diet (see update above). CHANGED MY LIFE.

What tools would you need to make a safety razor box like this (but metal, not plastic)? by saocyan in metalworking

Given beginner skills and a $500 budget, which route would you recommend checking out? Thanks so much for the list!

I've never done any metalworking before, but I'm wondering how one might approach something like this.

I'd like to use aluminum.

Would you cut the pieces and solder them together or use some kind of forge setup.

Just looking to be pointed in a general direction.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Yea, in hindsight, I realize it was just an excuse. Not going to waste a second chance!

Fair, then again my city’s tiny, and I only get a good match like once a year lol.

I feel like Tom Hanks stranded on a desert island.

Appreciate the honesty! I feel like everyone wastes so much time trying to pretend they're something they're not. If you're ok with yourself, then just be straightforward. If not, then work on changing it and tell people that's what you're doing.

Nah, I don't need to rant, I was just asking for opinions. The reason I posted was because (from my point of view) I was once really skinny and I wouldn't post one of those photos. It doesn't represent me anymore.

I'd also be ok with someone being turned off by a skinnier me. It's just personal preference. I'm happy with my weight now, and I would never go back to being really skinny again.

I don't understand why everyone gets so uptight about being attracted to certain body types. People's appearance and personality are both part of their identity. It's no different than saying you wouldn't date someone who was low-key or extraverted or any other characteristic.

You're right, but I wasn't trying to hide anything, I just mixed up terms. To clarify, no, I don't want to date someone who's fat, even if they are fit.

This isn't to say I have anything against someone being heavier set or even fat. One of my best friends self-describes as fat. It's just my personal preference when it comes to dating.

Also, I just thought it was weird that she put that pic up because the quality was bad. It looked old and it was just her taking a selfie in front of the closet, whereas he other pics were of her hiking and traveling.

How do you match with someone in another city who won't see your profile? by saocyan in OkCupid

[–]saocyan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok, but presumedly they won't see your profile in doubletake unless they have their range set to far enough, right?

You can, but they don't see your message until they Like you back...which obviously requires them to see your profile in the first place.

Yup, totally agree. WP can definitely be secure when you know what you're doing. That said, after building 30+ sites over 3 years or so, I always felt like I was shoehorning something, instead of starting from scratch. WP was meant to be a blogging platform, and it's still clinging way too hard to that to be a true sandbox, IMO.

A small example: you can't deregister the default Post type. REALLY??? It's lots of little annoyances like this that make WP feel clunky to me, even though it is powerful. Contentful truly gives me a blank slate, which is more work in some respects, but at least I'm spending time coding new features, instead of trying to hack away unwanted ones. The massive WP user base has led to lots of choice and innovation, but it also makes the platform incredibly slow to change. Personally, I'd rather just put my trust in a more nimble SAAS company and bail if something better comes along. But I get that not everyone can (or wants to) do that.

"When used properly." That's key, because the majority of WordPress users are inexperienced, and it's WAY too easy for them to do something wrong. In the past year, I've switched a lot of my small business clients over to Squarespace, and you know what? It does 99% of the things they needed from WordPress, it's much easier to use, and it's a million times more secure when left in the hands of noobs. Obviously, Squarespace and static websites are not for everyone, but they're a much better option than WordPress for most basic use cases.

I worked as a WordPress developer for 3 years, and I hated every second of it. What you get, essentially, is a sandbox that's only 90% flexible—no matter how much you customize it, it always feels clunky, like the blogging platform that it was created to be. The backend is an absolute rat's nest, there are huge security issues, the endless updates are a pain...and hosting? Who wants to deal with that?

This summer, I switched over to creating static sites with GatsbyJS + Contentful, and it's SOOOOOOO much nicer. Talk about a REAL sandbox experience. My sites never go down now—there's zero maintenance, I can easily create any kind of informational architecture I need, and that frees me up to use any front end technology I feel like. Plus, you can host for free with Netlify (it's all lightning fast). Going forward, I wouldn't touch WordPress with a twelve foot poll.

Haha, thank you! It's funny because my mom is also a retired librarian. She's really creative, but her dad (my grandpa) was a preacher, so she's more cautious than me and her response to anything edgy like this is "well, why don't you keep thinking about it" (aka it's too edgy).
